Honors Biology – Lab report guidelinesI. Title: The title should be descriptive and informative. For example, The Rate of Mitosis is better than Lab 2 (which is unacceptable). Determining the length of the different stages of Mitosis is even better and more descriptive. Be specific. You may not come up with a good title until the experiment is OVER!II. ProblemIf you are investigating two problems, you may have two statements. The problem or purpose of the investigation can be stated in interrogative form. It should be specific enough to relate to the procedures performed. For example, if you measured the rate of photosynthesis in isolated chloroplasts that had been incubated in light and dark, a GOOD statement of problem would be:Will the amount of light influence the rate of photosynthesis in isolated chloroplasts? Examples of POOR statements of the problem would be:To learn something about photosynthesisTo observe photosynthesisTo measure the rate of photosynthesisWhat is the rate of photosynthesis in isolated chloroplasts?III. Hypothesis:The hypothesis should be in the If....Then format. The hypothesis is what you think will happen during the experiment with some supportive reasoning. It differs from a guess in that it is based upon prior knowledge, research or evidence.IV. Background/Research:This section should discuss the underlying principles that are related to the lab problem. You should read over the lab and define any unusual terms or concepts and also include any math formulas you will be using.V. Materials and ProceduresThis section should be in paragraph form. You should provide sufficient detail so the reader can repeat the experiment. Describe all items used and the steps taken to perform the experiment. VII. Data and ObservationsData should be quantitative. Quantitative data should always be presented in a table with an accompanying graph. All graphs should have a title and each xis should be labeled. The title should be descriptive and not just one or two words. You should also include qualitative data.VIII. Conclusions and Discussion. This section should be in paragraph form. You should state your results and conclusions This is also a discussion section where you should discuss yourfindings and give reasons for the results you found. Thus, this should be a healthy paragraph. If your experiment supported your hypothesis, you always conclude this section stating the experiment should be repeated multiple times and the information should be shared with other scientists. If the experiment did not support your hypothesis, you should suggest improvements or changes in the experiment and then repeating the experiment. In this section you should describe flaws in the experiment and ways to improve the experiment.Be careful in stating the support for your hypothesis......a successful scientist notes that his experiment provides support for his hypothesis........one experiment does not “prove” anything.IX. Questions (if applicable): If I give you questions they should be answered here in complete sentences.A NOTE TO THE STUDENT:For the best possible score:Use headings for each section.Do not deviate from the recommended design.Turn the report in on the due date. While you performed the lab with a lab partner, your lab report should be your own work. While data may be the same as your partner, the background paragraph and conclusions sections should be your own words. Any duplicates will be given a
