Written Assignment – Chapter 8 I Key Terms and Concepts A. Empowerment and Engaging OthersDefine the term Empowerment (25)-Empowerment is based off assumptions that are different from those associated with motivating others or influencing others. Empowerment means providing freedom for people to successfully do what they want to do, rather than getting them to do what you want them to do. How is empowerment different from power (40)- Empowerment gives up the control by letting others make their own decisions, set goals, accomplish results, and receive rewards. Power means you are telling them what, when and how to do something with the authority instead of uplifting you are controlling them more. To empower means to enable. Power leads to competition, few people have it, and to get more power implies taking it away from someone else unlike empowerment. B. Define the 5 dimensions of empowerment are (25 each):a. Self-efficacy- Self-efficacy is when people are empowered or the feeling that they possess the capability and competence to perform a task successfully. Empowered people not only feel competent, they feel confident that they can perform adequately. b. Self-determination- Self-determination is where empowered people have a sense of having choices. They experience a sense of choice in initiating and regulating one’s own actions. People get self-determination when they can voluntarily and intentionally involve themselves in tasks rather than beingforced to or prohibited from involvement.c. Personal consequences- Personal consequences is similar and related to internal locus of control. People with personal consequences believe that expending effort will produce a result. It is also an individual’s belief at a given point in time in his or her ability to effect a change in a desired direction. d. Meaning- Meaning is the value or the purpose of outcomes of the activity in which they are engaged. Their own ideals and standards are perceived as consistent with what they are doing. Those activities with meaning create a sense of purpose, passion, or mission for the people.e. Trust- Trust is where one places themselves in vulnerability. People who are empowered have a sense of trust. They are confident that they will be treated fairly and equitable. They maintain an assurance that even if they are in subordinate positions, the ultimate outcome of their actions will be justice and goodness as opposed to harm or damage. C. The 9 prescriptions for developing empowerment (15 each):a. Articulate clear goals- Articulating a clear goal means to create a goal like a SMART goal. Making sure a goal that is specific, measurable, aligned, realistic and time bound. Goals motivates individuals to achieve higher performance. b. Foster personal mastery experiences- Fostering personal mastery experiences is to empower others to help them experience personal mastery over challenges and problems. c. Modeling- Is another way to empower people to demonstrate the correct behavior that they are to perform.d. Providing support- Providing the people with support is another technique to empower. It also providesthem with social and emotional support. e. Creating emotional arousal- Emotional arousal means to replace negative emotions like fear, anxiety, or crabbiness with positive emotions such as excitement, passion, or anticipation. f. Providing necessary resources- Empowering is also by providing the people with other kind of resourcesthat help them accomplish their tasks. g. Providing necessary information- Providing them with more information instead of less helps people gain a sense of empowerment and are more likely to work productively, successfully, and in harmony with your request. h. Connecting to outcomes- Giving the people the authority to connect with the problems on the spot. When they are giving the option to resolve the problem it creates empowerment to the employee.i. Creating confidence - There are 5 factors that help create a sense of confidence. Identify and define (15each) i. Reliability means the people have the confidence in you and you are held reliable. Being consistent, dependable, and stable. ii. Fairness is that you must be equitable and fair and must not take advantage of people. Making sure your judgements are clear and unbiased and fair. iii. Caring is that you should show a sense of personal concern for others and help each one feel important. iv. Openness is when you build confidence as you remain open and accessible. That you share information openly and honestly, and you don’t keep secrets that could harm others. v. Competence is when people need to be made aware of your competence. They need to be assured that you have the necessary ability, experience, and knowledge to lead and to solve problems. D. Identify and define the three broad Inhibitors to empowerment* are (15each): a. Attitudes about subordinates is people who avoid empowering others believe that they are not competent enough to accomplish the work, aren’t interested in taking on more responsibility, are already overloaded and unable to accept more responsibility. b. Personal insecurities meaning people fear they will lose the recognition and rewards associated with successful task accomplishment if they empower others. c.
