Ben DeFonzoMr. JohnsonEnglish 9 honors7 September 18The novel “The Good Thief” is about a kid named Ren who is at a catholic orphanage in New England. He does not have a hand and was in an orphanage till he was 14. He got adopted to a family that stole the things they need. He was a thief that took what he needed for his family. His life was not great he was in an orphanage and then got adopted to a family of thieve. I could argue that his life would be better if he was not sent to an orphanage and he was taken in by a family member.Ren was in an orphan he was adopted by a family that stole what they needed. One of the family members even said to him “know what you need and if it crosses your path take it” whichis an example of how he learned to just take whatever he needed or wanted. Ren could have beenput with his uncle and Ren would not have had to steal. He also would have had a loving family. A supporting family is very important. If he was not put in an orphanage he would not have had to be adopted to a new family and led a life of stealing. “In the end he deserted. He traveled miles back, through the forest and over rivers, lakes, and mountains.” (48) This is the part were Ren’s dad left him and left his family to get away. His dad did not know that Ren’s mom was having a baby. Another part of the reason he would have led a better life with his uncle is he would have had a family. One theme of the book is the importance of family. And Ren did not have that until 14, and even then he did not have a blood related family. Ren could have never went throughbeing in an orphanage and could have led a better life with his uncle. He had to steal with his new family. “When death comes, she said, all that matters is being next to one another.” Ren had an adoption family that comforted him. But Ren never knew his mom, and never knew about his mom. If he had his uncle he could have had shown Ren pictures and told stories about Ren’s mother. And Ren could have imagined his mom. He had no idea what his mom was like at the orphanage.I think that Ren would have had a better life with his uncle. He would have a relative that he lives with. And he would not go through the orphanage. He would have known more about hismother with his uncle and not been so confused about his family. Ren would not have led a life of theft with his adoption family either. Ren’s life would have been better if he lived with his uncle and not in an
