COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course is designed for psychology majors who wish to learn more about career paths in psychology and strategies for becoming a competitive and attractive candidate to employers and graduate schools. It provides a road map for how students can prepare for a career in psychology with a bachelor’s degree, including how to prepare for graduate education, if desired. ACADEMIC INTEGRITY CODE: This class will follow the UNCG policy on cheating. A copy of this policy is available at: http://saf.dept.uncg.edu/studiscp/Manual.html TEXT (should be helpful to you throughout your studies of Psychology at the Undergraduate level): • Required: I-clicker response system—you may use the same i-clicker in multiple classes. • Recommended Text: Eric Landrum and Stephen Davis (2010). The Psychology Major: Career Options and Strategies for Success (5th edition). Upper Saddle River, NJ: Prentice Hall. ISBN 9780205829651 • Recommended Text: Paul Silvia, Peter Delaney, and Stuart Marcovitch (2009). What Psychology Majors Could (and Should) Be Doing: An Informal Guide to Research Experience and Professional Skills. Washington, DC: American Psychological Association. ISBN: 9781433804380 STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES & TEACHING STRATEGIES: At the completion of this course, students will understand the broad range of career paths available to psychology majors and will have learned many strategies for building skills and standing out during their time at UNCG. This course will involve lectures, guest speakers from different fields related to psychology, and guest speakers from UNCG Centers that are relevant for students’ career development (e.g., Career Services). ATTENDANCE: Attending class is mandatory. There are 13 scheduled classes (including the first lecture). Students must attend at least 11 of these classes to receive a passing grade, which means you have two buffers for illness, family emergencies, or other reasons--do not waste your buffers. If you are unable to attend 11 classes (for any reason), it means that you did not get exposed to the material that the course was intended to pass on, and it means you must take the course again in another semester. If you are not able to comply with the attendance policy, please take this course another semester. Important: This course starts and finishes on time. If you arrive more than 5 minutes late, or if you leave early, you will be counted absent. You must bring your UNCG ID to every class. You will swipe your UNCG card BEFORE CLASS to get the appropriate credit for attendance. In addition, at the end of every class, a list of names will randomly be selected. If you are on this list, then you must show your ID to the TA before you leave the classroom. Students who do not show their ID will be presumed to have left class early, and you will be counted absent. You must scan your own card or use your own clicker, and based on the UNCG Academic Integrity Code, violation of this policy will result in an academic penalty. If you have questions about your attendance, contact: Shannon Adcock [email protected] 122 Fall 2017 2 Religious observance: This class follows University policy regarding absences for religious observances. Please visit http://web.uncg.edu/reg/Bulletin/Current/AcaRegs/ClassAttendance.aspx. EVALUATION METHODS AND GUIDELINES FOR ASSIGNMENTS: This is a 1-credit course graded as PASSING/NOT PASSING (P/NP). ASSIGNMENTS: • Assignments must be uploaded in Canvas BEFORE the beginning of class. You will not be able to access the assignment platform to upload your document after 4:00 PM on the due date. • Your assignment must reflect that you have thought through the issues discussed in class, and they must clearly address the task(s)/questions assigned. Otherwise, your assignment will NOT be counted. • Do NOT email your assignment to the instructor or TA. Assignments that are emailed to the instructor or TA will NOT be counted. • There will be 13 opportunities to hand in assignments. To PASS this course, students must successfully complete 11 assignments (i.e. 11 assignments must earn a grade of P). • Note that it is not a good strategy to skip assignments early in the course, in case you have trouble with an assignment later in the course. • If you do not attend a lecture, you cannot submit an assignment for that lecture. • If you missed class and would like lecture notes … it is your responsibility to get notes from a classmate. The instructor and TA will NOT provide lecture notes to students. Note: If you do not attend a lecture, you cannot submit an assignment for that lecture. • If you have questions about your assignments, contact: TBA TECHNOLOGY ETIQUETTE: • I expect you to be attentive in class and to turn your cell phones/pagers/electronic gadgets OFF before each class begins. If your electronic gadgets go off in class, I may ask you to leave class, and this class will be counted as an absence. • Please do not waste your time and distract other students by surfing the internet during class. If you are caught using electronic gadgets in any way that we may construe to be non-academic, you will receive an absence for the class. If you find yourself tempted by your electronic gadgets, then leave them at home. EMAIL ETIQUETTE: • I will check my email at least twice a day on weekdays (before 5:00pm). If you have questions about the class which require more than simple 2-sentence answers, please come in person to see me or the TA. • I receive a great deal of email daily and so I may not respond to you immediately. Please check your syllabus and Canvas before asking a question that has already been answered elsewhere. If it has been answered elsewhere, I will, depending upon how busy I am, likely not respond to your question. When you email me, include “PSY122 Student” as the first
