T., & Freberg, L. A. (2015). Discovering Psychology: The Science of Mind (2nd Edition). Cengage Learning.Overview and Objective: This course will introduce psychology as a scientific discipline and a profession. Emphasis will be placed on the diverse theoretical approaches within psychology andapplications of these theories. We will broadly cover core areas of psychology such as research methods, biological bases of behavior, sensation and perception, states of consciousness, motivation, learning, and memory. By the end of the course, students should be familiar with the basic methodologies and theories within these topics.Grading Policy:Points Percentage Course Grade540-600 90-100 A480-539 80-89 B420-479 70-79 C360-419 60-69 Dup to 359 up to 59 FGrades will be based on the following activities:Thought Cards (8) 10 points each 80In-class Exercises (20) 10 points each 170 (+30 potential bonus points)Exams (3) 50 points each 150Quizzes (2) 10 points each 20Critique paper 30 points 30BTD Paper 60 points 60Presentation 30 points 30Research (10 credits) 6 points 60 (+2 points for each extra up to 20 points)Total points 600Thought Cards: You are expected to complete the reading for the class period prior to the start of class. At the beginning of class, you will turn in a “thought card” with a few sentences reaction to the assigned reading. It may be in the form of questions that you have about the content, reactions to something you learned, applications of the material to your own life, etc. You may also want to note your reaction in your own notes in order to remember it for the discussion portion of the class. Each thought card is worth 10 points. Thought cards can be turned in early if you already know you will be missing a class period, but they will not be accepted after the due date.In-class Exercises: Periodically throughout class you will be asked to answer questions on a sheet of paper and those answers will be turned in at the end of class. Often, there will be no “right” or “wrong” answers, but you will get points for participation. Points will be deducted for missing answers. Each in-class exercise is worth a total of 10 points. In-class exercises cannot bemade up. However, there will be three extra in-class exercises so that you will not be penalized until more than 3 class periods are missed. This also means that if you complete every exercise you can earn up to 30 bonus points. Exams and Quizzes: There will be three required exams. Each exam will be worth 50 points. You will need a scantron (green with 100 answers) and a #2 pencil for all exams unless otherwisespecified. Exams will be distributed at the beginning of the class session. If you arrive late you will not be allowed extra time. Make-up exams should be scheduled BEFORE an exam is missed. There will also be two quizzes: one on the syllabus and one on APA formatting. Each quiz is worth 10 points. Make-up quizzes will be considered on a case-by-case basis.Critique Paper: You will choose ONE of several articles available on Blackboard and write a 1-2 page double-spaced article critique to be submitted on Blackboard through Turnitin. This will be a critique of the science, NOT a summary of the article. Refer to Chapter 2 (Research Methods) to determine what is good science. The critique paper is worth 30 points and 2 points will be deducted for each day it is late. More information will be provided following exam 1. Be The Difference Paper: Choose a topic that is important to you and apply what you have learned in class to make a difference in yourself or the world in a 3-5 page paper using APA format. Pick any topic (getting better sleep, healthy eating habits, getting people to wear seat belts, etc.) and use psychological concepts or principles to formulate a reasonable way to make a difference. This paper is worth 60 points. More information will be provided following exam 1.Be The Difference Presentation: Using the topic written about in your Be The Difference Paper,you will compose a brief (5-10 minutes) presentation to share your topic with the class. This presentation is worth 30 points. More information will be provided following exam 1.Research Participation: 10% of your grade is earned by completing the research requirement. You are expected to earn ten (10) credits by either participating in psychology experiments through the SONA system (1 credit for each ½ hour of participation) or write summaries of research papers (4 credits for a 2-page summary). You can earn research credits by either 1) participating in research studies, and/or 2) writing research summaries. After the required 10 credits, you can receive up to 10 additional credits worth 2 bonus points each.If you choose to participate in research studies: You must be 18 years or older to participate in research studies. To participate in research studies, go to http://unt.sona-systems.com and create an account. Here you will be able to find and sign up for studies that interest you. Once you sign up for a study, make certain to be on time(or early). If you sign up for a study but then do not show up, you will be assigned a no-show. If you have failed to show up for 3 or more research studies over the course of your account (i.e., this is NOT 3 per semester, it is 3 total), you are blocked out of the SONA system permanently. Once this happens, you will need to complete research summaries for credit. The last day to participate is May 3 at 5pm. Questions should be sent to [email protected] you choose to write research papers:Each successfully completed summary is worth 4 credits. If you would like feedback on your summaries and a chance for revision (should there be any need) if problems exist, you must turn your summary in to the Psychology Main Office (Terrill Hall 316) before March 31 at 5pm. If you do not want feedback or a chance for revision, the final due date for summaries is April 14 at4pm. No late papers are accepted, so plan ahead! Questions should be sent to [email protected].
