Professor HeidnerConcert Report No.3I attended the “SBCC Concert Band” directed by Eric Heidner on Sunday 7 p.m., December 4, 2016 at the Gavin Theater, SBCC West Campus with friends. It was my second time visiting the Garvin Theater. The concert costs 15 dollars, but I bought the ticket for only 10 dollars because of student discount. There were approximately 200 people in the concert hall. I sat at the middle of the hall. The seat provided nice view and clear music sound.Beginning of the concert, the conductor was standing on the stage and tuned the music on. All of members of the orchestra dressed very formal; men wore tuxedos, woman wore long dress with black color. There were almost 50 performers including the conductor. First playing was “The Essence of Youth” by Stijn Roels (Belgium). There were wide varieties of instruments: piano, flute, horn, oboe, clarinet, trumpet, saxophone, bassoon and so on. The piece started with dynamic and bright rhythms, and its meters changes. The first movement built with the full theme in the flugelhorns. The chorale return in muted brass and juxtaposing against dissonant harmonies in the saxophones. My favorite was “The Bermuda Triangle” by Jose Alberto Pina, same as my friend liked. The instruments were similar to “The Essence of Youth” that I listed above, but there was one that stands out specially. It was Puili Stick that created the tropical and mysterious theme. The theme music was played by computer sound that contained with bird, boat, and plane sounds instead of played by the instruments. It started with a soft then gradually the sounds expanded into widely and dynamic. It sounds kind of profound and mysterious, but still nice and very attractive.I have never been to the concert before taking this class. This concert would be last concert for a while because I am not a person who goes to the music concert oneself. It was nice experiences and because of this class, I could enjoy the music. I was very surprised about the organization and the performance. This was my first programmatic music concertand personally, it was better than the jazz concert that I attended before. I really enjoyed the concert and the concert was really worth the money. It was great
