ANTH 103A Day in the Life of a MidwifeA. What did you learn (or did you take good field notes?) (Section total: 30 points.)A1. Why did Teodora become a midwife? (5 points)- Teodora did not want to become a midwife at first. Because when she was very young, itseemed like her mother worked too hard; her mother took care of her, and father, and thehouse, and went to market- all that. And then, someone would always need her to help. And then once she went away for a long time to visit her sister in Etlan, but we neededher here. But she decided to become a midwife when she delivered her first baby. Hermother was away helping a woman in Ompapan. But this woman here in Amopan, Anawas her name, was giving birth all of a sudden. They came for her mother, but all thefound was Teodora. She was terrified but knew what to do, and she felt wonderfulafterward. This is why she decided to become a midwife.A2. Was there any special event that launched Teodora into midwifery? (5 points)- She decided to become a midwife when she delivered her first baby on Christmas. Hermother was away helping a woman in Ompapan. But this woman here in Amopan, Anawas her name, was giving birth all of a sudden. They came for her mother, but all thefound was Teodora. She was terrified but knew what to do, and she felt wonderfulafterward. This is why she decided to become a midwife.A3. How is the sweatbath used in her health care activities? (5 points)- She believes the sweatbath is very important because it warms and loosens up themother’s body before she gives birth. Afterward, she goes into the sweatbath with thepragnat woman, and fan her with bunches of leaves—banana, coffee, oak, pine, rosemary, leaves like that. Sometimes she rubs aguardiente the woman’s body to make it reallywarm. She believes all of this is important not just for the mother, but for everyone elsetoo. Also, mother’s sweatbath prevent a nasty skin rash by just touching a new mother.A4. What does Teodora think of the other midwife in Amopan? (5 points)- There is only one midwife in Amopan. But Julia is another midwife in the next town wholives cross the river from Amopan. She thinks Julia is a great midwife too.A5. What is Teodora’s opinion of the clinic in Cintlan? (5 points)- She likes the doctor who’s there now. But they change doctors a lot. If she has a verydifficult birth, she can get help from them. They can do cesarean deliveries, but shecannot. But she does not know because it seems to her they do a lot of them. Many of thewomen in Amopan are afraid to have their children there. But Alicia thinks they shouldvisit the doctor while they are embarasadas.A6. What roles do midwives play in Amopan society? (5 points)- The roles of midwives are very important because women still prefer to see midwives todeliver their baby instead of visiting the clinics.B. Making connections (Section total: 50 points)B1. Professor Radcliffe-Prichard also interacted with a midwife in Amopan in 1965 (Answerboth a and b below. If the “film” doesn’t work, use the text option.) a. Are there similarities between what he found out and what you found out? What are they? (10 points)- Francisca Ticitl is the most respected midwife in Amopan.- The things that he learned about the sweatbath.- While sweat bath, scrubbing the body with leaves. - That her young daughter does not fellow her footsteps after.b. Do you find differences between what Radcliffe-Pritchard’s findings and yourown? What are they? (10 points)- Although sweat bath is good, she does not offer to everybody, but she offers topregnant woman only.- Although he states that the villagers have a lot of confidence in her healing power, this is not true. Villagers trust her more when she gives birth to their babies.B2. What do you think Francisca Ticitl’s husband’s name is. (The authors emphasize that this isnot a trick question.) (5 points)- Ticitl means “midwife” in NahualtB3. Bummer! One of the films R-P recorded is missing. Based on what you already know fromRadcliffe-Prichard’s and Teodora’s accounts, write a probable account of the Britishanthropologist’s narratives. You will need to create some information; be sure it is consistentwith what you already know. This is an exercise in inference; your knowledge will always beincomplete. (25 points)- In fact, the jobs of the midwives are pretty simple. They help women give birth. And theylearned about a lof of remedies, with herbs. People often come by for that kid of help too. They also helps pregnant woman prior to their birth. Teodora believes that it is veryimportant. She usually visits them four times and gives them good massages. Sometimesshe gives them a sweatbath, but not too hot. She also gives them a special tea to protectthem from mal aire: Literally means “bad air.” This is a malevolent wind, or a spirit thatrides on the wind. It causes misfortune and disease. Shamans and midwives havetechniques for curing victims of these dangerous winds. She also helps them duringchildbirth. She usually goes to their homes. First, she lights a candle and them gives thewoman a special tea to hurry up the delivery. She prefers that the woman kneels. She tiesa sash around pregnant woman’s stomach, and also squeezes her belly to help push thebaby out. After the baby’s born, she cut the umbilical cord with a sharp piece of cane. Shesometimes faces on some difficulties while she tries to give birth to the baby. The babyjust won’t come out, or it is not lined up right. If the baby’s slow, she massages thewoman’s stomach, and gets rid of mal aire with a tea of corn roots and round upporcupine quills. If the baby is backward, she massages to line it up. If the placenta won’tcome, she makes the mother gag by putting her braid in her mouth. After she delivers thebaby, she does a ritual cleansing of the mother and child. They offer candles and food andcopal incense to the earth spirit. She does not do this, because she hears they do it insome villagers to the north. When all of her work is finished, people usually pay cash. She basically has a fixed cost: 550 pesos. This includes all the parental and postnatal caretoo. But most women give her extra thins for those visits, and for their time in the sweatbath- food, cigarettes, a little aguardiente, some ribbons. Most people cannot
