ANTH 103Bali as a Model of Holism Centered in Subaks: An Assignment1. The three worlds according to Balinese Cosmology is based on the swah, the bhur, and the bwah. These are known as gods, demons, and humans. The cycle of time brings the three worlds together. There concept of creation and decay matches those of Juedo-Christian traditions. The creation is like the good, made by the gods, as the decay is like the evil portrayed through the demons and death.2. The subsistence system used by the Balinese goes with correlation with how watering or irrigation is timed with ceremonial acts. This matches with their cosmic world view as energy or life is shifted across areas in cycles. The water is spread out through the different areas of the temples causing a spread of water rather than killing crops by drowning or need of more water. This shows the reincarnation or cycle of water going through different rice or crop fields.3. The arts or puppetry play a huge role in the Balinese people’s cultures. The puppetry is used to translate ancient stories to people down through generations. It is also said to be used as an easy way for a window into other worlds called waiyang. This Wai yang is a passage that eases from human world to a godly world.4. Eka Desa Rudra is a temple ceremony which takes places once every hundred years known as the century ceremony. This ceremony is used to portray the growth and decay cycles of life. This ceremony is also still being celebrated to show that, “We will not let outside forces change us. It is shown in their cosmos believe that a new cycle has started. In 1963 the attempt regarded as “the wrong time” was called this, because the Balinese people thought a volcano erupted and killed everyone in the 10km range. Even all the buildings were torn down except one temple, where the lava flowed around it. 5. Balinese people use technology to adapt to modernization. A system to learn and grow with their religion can be beneficial to the Balinese people and culture. The Dutch colonization tired to colonize Bali, but the Balinese people would rather seek death than being controlled by outsiders. Communication technologies was and is still used for religious growth. “Technology doesn’t help or not help the Balinese, only technology can be learned from” once said by a Balinese priest.6. Many modern technology brought disasters to the Balinese people. The Indonesian government tried to impose the Green Revolution model on the Balinese agriculture. The Indonesian government thought that the new artificial fertilizers would help their field growth, but this only decreased and killed their crops. Changing the cultivation ways theyhad only killed the plants and brought unwanted pests. 7. There are many different ways to compare and contrast our religions in today’s societies. Hinduism and Buddhism are more eastern religious showing a eased side of life. They believe there are cycles of life and reincarnation. Karma is considered a bigtopic in these religions as if one does good in one life, the next life will be good. In the Abrahamic religions or more western known religious such as Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. There is one cycle. You have only a very limited time here on earth to prove your ability. These Abrahamic religions believe once dead you only can return to heaven or hell. You will leave your physical body behind moving onto a world you cannot come back too. All religions do compare in many ways such as they all have good and evil, have ceremonies or traditions, and have a unified meaning for all to benefit and
