Assignment 7: A Day in the Life of a MidwifeTotal This Assignment: 400 PointsWith this assignment, you will be getting down to the nitty-gritty aspects of fieldwork. Midwifery may or may not be your cup of tea (as Radcliffe-Pritchard might say), but these exercises involve the same kind of field techniques you would use, regardless of topic. You will learn to deal with the realities of fieldwork—delays when your informant is “late,” interruptions of all kinds, tests of your smattering of Nahuatl, and what to do when your informant goes off on a tangent. An important point: If your ego has prevented you from making “wrong” statements or responses, now is the time to put it aside and—literally—learn from your errors. Choose both correct and “incorrect” responses. This is a high-count assignment—and with good reason (Total this program: 400 points )A. What did you learn (or did you take good field notes?) (Section total: 30 points.)A1. Why did Teodora become a midwife? (5 points)Teodora did not want to become a midwife at first because when she was very young, hermother, a midwife, seemed like worked too hard. Teodora’s mother had to take care of the children, the father, and the house and all that. And then someone in the village always needed her help too. But Teodora decided to become a midwife after experiencing a special event. A2. Was there any special event that launched Teodora into midwifery? (5 points)When Teodora was twenty years old, her mother, Francisca, was away helping a woman in Ompapan but a woman in Amopan was giving a birth all of sudden. The woman needed amidwife and Teodora was the only person who could help her. Even though Teodora was terrified, she knew what to do and felt so wonderful afterward. She knew then she would becomea midwife.A3. How is the sweatbath used in her health care activities? (5 points)Teodora uses sweatbath as a part of prenatal regiment. She states that sweatbath is very important because it warms and loosens up the mother’s body before she gives birth. Teodora also uses sweatbath as a part of a postnatal care regiment. She insists the mother and the baby take a sweatbath with her on the fourth, eight, and twelfth days after giving birth. When I was sick, Teodora also insisted that I would take a sweatbath and it made me feel much better. I think that she uses sweatbath anywhere she sees it fit. A4, What does Teodora think of the other midwife in Amopan? (5 points)Alicia is another midwife in Amopan who lives across the river. But Teodora does not consider Alicia as a part of Amopan community completely because Alicia has been in Amopan for only 7 years. According to Teodora, Alicia thinks that women should visit the doctor Some midwives do a ritual cleansing of mother and child. They offer candles and food and copal incense to the earth spirit. Teodora does not do this but she does not seem to be opposed to such rituals either. Some midwives have learned at the clinics to give injections and Teodora has been think about doing the same. It seems like Tedora is willing to accept other midwive’s practices if they seem to work. A5. What is Teodora’s opinion of the clinic in Cintlan? (5 points)She likes the doctor who is there now but the clinic changes doctors a lot. When Teodora has a very difficult birth, she gets help from the clinic. The clinic performs cesarean deliveries. Many of the women in Amopan are afraid to have their children at the clinic. A6. What roles do midwives play in Amopan society? (5 points) They provide prenatal and post natal care and perform deliveries in place of western medical care system. The midwives in Amopan also provide remedies for illnesses using herbsand some modern medicine such as aspirin. They play important role in Amopan where not manywomen feel comfortable going to the clinic in Citlan to deliver their babies. B. Making connections (Section total: 50 points)B1. Professor Radcliffe-Prichard also interacted with a midwife in Amopan in 1965 (Answer both a and b below. If the “film” doesn’t work, use the text option.)a. Are there similarities between what he found out and what you found out? What are they? (10 points)Yes there are some similarities. Like Teodora, Francisca, Teodora’s mother, provided sweatbath to anyone in town and who needs them, but especially for pregnant women. Francisca, the midwife in Radcliffe-Prichard’s time, also has a very impressive knowledge of the local herbal medicines. The villagers trust in her healing powers and most of them preferred to go see the midwife even though the medical clinic in Cintlan was already established. b. Do you find differences between what Radcliffe-Pritchard’s findings and your own? What are they? (10 points)According to Radcliffe-Pritchard, Francisca did not think that Teodora would become a midwife because Teodora was too giddy. However, now Teodora is a midwife following her mother’s footsteps. B2. What do you think Francisca Ticitl’s husband’s name is. (The authors emphasize that this is not a trick question.) (5 points)Curandero because Teodora’s last name is Curandero. B3. Bummer! One of the films R-P recorded is missing. Based on what you already know from Radcliffe-Prichard’s and Teodora’s accounts, write a probable account of the British anthropologist’s narratives. You will need to create some information; be sure it is consistent with what you already know. This is an exercise in inference; your knowledge will always be incomplete. (25 points)In the R-P’s film that is missing, he must have talked about how Francisca became a midwife, her importance in the community, and birthing customs. Francisca’s mother was a midwife and Francisca learned a lot by talking to her mother and asking a lot of questions. Francisca’s mother seemed to like that she was interested in following her footsteps. When Francisca got a little older she even helped her mother sometimes, but mostly the women in labordid not want her to be in the labor. At first Francisca was not really interested in becoming a midwife, but after delivering the first baby, she felt so great and knew that she would become a midwife. Prior to brith, Francisca usually visits the pregnant women and gives them good massages. Sometimes she gives them a sweatbath, but not too hot. She also gives them a special tea to protect them from mal aire. During the child birth, Francisca usually go to their homes. First, she lights a candle
