SOC 101, #58920Blog Assignment: Widen Inequality Because ofPeople are getting higher education as time passing. On the other hand, the gap of theeducation is also growing. So, as people are getting higher education, the global inequality is widening. The article, “Higher Education Widens Global Inequality” written by Audrey P. Scott who is Dartmouth College freshman, argues about the global inequality as people getting higher education. According to the article, American colleges and universities focus more on profit rather than shrinking the international equality gap. Colleges do not strive for poor population, and nobody argues about the economic disproportion of international students. Scott claims that U.S. institutions accumulate wealth from other countries’ wealthy students, with detailed statistics data. Most of American universities demand the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) to international student in order to apply; but this test is limitary to many potential applicants for entrance to a school due to the fact that English is not general for many students who live far from major cities or who attend lower quality public schools. It is not cheap to learn English. And so, Scott suggests that educationalinstitutions would better give more of their efforts to their sister schools abroad. Schools can have more freedom of choice and lead to a more diverse culture by limiting their financial aidand adjuring international students to have English proficiency, but it leads economic diversity to diminish. Thus, ultimately, it makes widen the gap between the two groups that poorer group and wealthy group. Scott supports this with that most international students whostudy in U.S. are the offspring of executives, politicians, and lawyers rather than of farmers or factory workers. It does not give poorer population opportunities for mobility to move upward. In conclusion, the truth is that higher education aggravates and accelerates global inequality.I could pick the article very quickly when I just see the title of the article because it iswhat I often think. So, I very much agree with the author that schools seem not to care poorerpopulation. For example, California colleges and universities have different tuition fee depends on whether students have permanent California residency or not, and also financial aid for international students in the United States is limited (and an aid is not really helpful amount). I heard that many students have a lot of loan due to expensive tuition fee. Such being the reason, I also think that United States educational institution should increase the financial aid for students who attend schools in the United States. This article relate to me personally. I am the one of international students who live far from majority city of the nation, and I was born in normal family, not wealthy but not poor. Although my family is not poor at all, U.S. college tuition fee is too expensive for my normal family background. I am going to transfer next semester to somewhere in UCs. Then my father’s economic burden would be increase hugely about three times than now. It means that the students who are poorer than my family would not afford to attend schools in the United States. Many international students would come to U.S. schools for having a good job or making good money, but it is for wealthy people. Poorer people have to apply for a loan in order to graduate from school. And so, even if they find a job after graduation, they would pay back a loan every month for a long time. Then, social inequality will increase, and as time goes on, the two groups’ gap between wealthier group and poorer group will be huger extremely. To solve this social inequality, institution should expand the financial aid and decrease tuition feea little bit for international. I have seen many people, especially and most of them are Chinese, who have nice and extremely expensive car such as Porches, Maserati, and even Lamborghini. When I see them, I really feel jealous. I hope that the educational system wouldreform, and the gap would decrease.ReferenceScott. Audrey P. “Higher Education Widens Global Inequality” Everyday Sociology Blog.Feb 08. 2016. Web. Apr 16.
