BZ 120 or LIFE 102 CHEM 245 or concurrent registration or CHEM 341 or concurrent registration or CHEM 345 or concurrent registration IMPORTANT READ THIS FIRST You will be required to read this syllabus in its entirety and take a 5 point Online Syllabus Quiz before the due date indicated on the schedule The questions in the quiz will cover only the material found in this syllabus The reasons I have chosen to implement this quiz are 1 if you are motivated to read the syllabus at home I don t have to spend valuable class time reading the syllabus to you when you are capable of reading it yourself 2 it is important that you read this thing so you know what I expect of you and what you can expect from me and 3 it gives you a chance to earn 5 easy points right off the bat Office Hours Monday 1 00 3 00 Thursday 11 00 1 00 Starting off on the right foot Please do not ask me administration questions that you can answer yourself by reading the course syllabus schedule OR that can be answered by a classmate Please do not approach me before class as I m setting up but feel free to come up after if you need to talk to me That said please wait until I am done 1 uploading the lecture capture video before you begin to speak I want to be able to give you my full attention Communication with me Email is the best way to contact me I will do my best to return your emails in a timely manner but if I don t it s either because your email to me was out of line I ve received a few or yours fell through the cracks and sending me another one couldn t hurt I receive hundreds of emails page You can also view your own grade here Outside work This course requires two hours minimum of outside work for each contact hour in order to help you achieve the learning goals through videos readings assignments projects or other activities mandated Course Description MIP 300 General Microbiology is a 3 credit one semester course in general microbiology This course consists of 3 one hour lectures MWF per week The course surveys the discipline of microbiology and it meets the needs of students interested in microbiology other biological sciences biotechnology chemical and environmental engineering environmental health medical technology nutrition plant and animal sciences and many of the agricultural sciences This course also fulfills the microbiology requirement for pre professional students who intend to enroll in medical dental veterinary or other related professional programs Lectures highlight the assigned reading material in the textbook and occasionally bring in other relevant material Material is presented in both lecture format and through active learning strategies Students are responsible for the material covered in class in the assigned readings in pre recorded lectures and in handout material Course Learning Objectives 1 You will be able to categorize microbial organisms 2 You will be able to explain the concept of selective toxicity and apply it to antimicrobial and antiviral drug development 3 You will be able to distinguish prokaryotic and eukaryotic microbes and connect these differences to antimicrobial mechanisms 2 4 You will be able to draw the structure of Gram negative and Gram positive cell walls and relate these structures to disease pathogenesis and drug targeting 5 You will be able to apply your knowledge of diverse microbial metabolic pathways to solve real world pollution problems 6 You will be able to diagram basic immunologic responses to infections and vaccinations 7 You will be able to relate microbial growth requirements to disease processes 8 You will be able to interconnect bacterial pathogenesis with disease outcomes immune responses and vaccine development 9 You will be able to write a bacterial mRNA sequence and draw its basic structure when given a piece of bacterial DNA 10 You will be able to model the production of a bacterial protein when given a sequence of mRNA 11 You will be able to explain several different ways by which bacteria become resistant to antibiotics 12 You will be able to order steps of viral replication according to viral families and then predict which steps could be drug targets Group Examinations In the second week of class you will form a group with 4 5 other members of the class Groups must be no larger than 5 people Your group will complete 4 graded in class Group Exams during the semester please note the due dates of the Group Exams on your course schedule These exams allow you to spend more time on concepts that normally give students trouble Each group member should work on the exam individually before meeting with the rest of the group outside of class Your group will fill in one sheet for your group that will be turned in and graded The group exams must be completed outside of class before the due date of the group exam At the start of class on the due date you will be given 10 minutes to meet with your group after which we will begin the Clicker Quiz The Clicker Quizzes are designed to make sure each member in the group pulled their own weight and that each person understands the material on the Group Exam The clicker quiz will start promptly at the beginning of class so make sure your group is ready to turn in the Group Exam BEFORE class There are two percentages to keep in mind that are associated with the Group Exams The 70 Rule The first percentage relates to your performance on the clicker quiz You must get at least 70 correct on the clicker quiz to get the score your group received on the Group Exam If you get less than 70 on the clicker quiz you will automatically receive 70 of the score your group received 3 The 50 Rule The second percentage relates to
