The purpose of the flipped classroom is to move away from passive, lecture-based learning, which we know is only 5-10% effective, to active and problem-based learning. So, during our flipped class periods, we will be working through different activities that allow you to interact with the material in a more effective and meaningful way. Before each of these flipped classes, you will be expected to watch a pre-recorded lecture at home. To make sure you have watched the pre-recorded lecture and prepared yourself for the in-class activity, you will be required to complete an Online Pre-Flip Quiz that will open approximately 3-4 days prior to the flipped class and will close 15 MINUTES BEFORE CLASS. You may take each quiz up to 3 times to improve your score; your best score will be recorded in the grade book. You may use your notes, and you may work with other students, however, each student must complete their own quizzes and each quiz is different, as it is randomly created from a large pool of questions. These quizzes will be based on the pre-recorded lecture captures that you should watch BEFORE attempting the quiz. You will NOT be given the answers, however, you will be told which questions you have missed and you will be given your total score out of 5 points. Again, these quizzes are due 15 minutes BEFORE class begins and are meant to prepare you for the flipped class activities. You may NOT drop any of these quizzes, and you may not take them late. See the MIP Course Schedule for the precise deadlines of the Online Pre-Flip Quizzes, each of which is worth 5 points for a total of 20 points.Online Post-Flip QuizOnline Concept Quizzes: You will be required to take 5 Online Concept Quizzes during the semester that are each worth 20 points, and your lowest quiz score will be dropped (80 points total). You may take each quiz up to 10 times to improve your score, you may use your notes, and you may work with other students; however, each student must complete their own quizzes and each quiz is different because they are randomly created from a large pool of questions. These quizzes will be based on questions and concepts from lectures and the textbook. You will NOT be given the answers, however, you be told which questions you have missed and you will be given your total score out of 20. Your final attempt must be completed by 11:59 on the Fridays indicated on the class schedule, and your highest score will be recorded. After the deadline for completion of the quizzes, the answers will be released and you can check what questions you have missed and why. Questions similar to these will be on your in-class examinations. Note: If you miss a quiz, this will automatically be the quiz you drop, and you may not take them late.Cheat Sheets:MIP300 Examinations and Grading:Clickers:Lecture Capture:My Teaching Philosophy:Classroom conduct:Tutoring:Students with Disabilities: are encouraged to contact the Resources for Disabled Student’s office to arrange for accommodations and support services. The questions in the quiz will cover only the material found in this syllabus. The reasons I have chosen toimplement this quiz are: 1) if you are motivated to read the syllabus at home, I don’t have to spend valuable class time reading the syllabus to you when you are capable of reading it yourself, 2) it is important that you read this thing so you knowwhat I expect of you and what you can expect from me, and 3) it gives you a chanceto earn 5 easy points right off the bat! Office Hours: Monday 1:00-3:00Thursday 11:00-1:00Starting off on the right foot: - Please do not ask me administration questions that you can answer yourselfby reading the course syllabus/schedule OR that can be answered by aclassmate. - Please do not approach me before class as I’m setting up, but feel free tocome up after if you need to talk to me. That said, please wait until I am done1uploading the lecture capture video before you begin to speak – I want to beable to give you my full attention. Communication with me: Email is the best way to contact me. I will do my best to return your emails in atimely manner, but if I don’t, it’s either because your email to me was out of line(I’ve received a few), or yours fell through the cracks and sending me another onecouldn’t hurt. I receive hundreds of emails every week, so thank you in advance forbeing judicious when you email me. Importantly, please tell me which section(9:00 or 12:00) of MIP 300 you are in when you email me, and be sure toinclude your first and last name.MIP300 Canvas Page: The home page for this course is http://canvas.colostate.edu/.
