Assignment 2 - Identifying Hypotheses, Independent (IV) and Dependent variables (DV) and Potential Confounds. In a new document, type the answers for each research question. Please be concise but complete. NOTE: Be sure to refer to the “Common Writing Mistakes” handout posted in Angel. Please avoid making the errors mentioned in this document. While it is permissible to complete this assignment in question/answer format, be sure to conform to the other general practices/guidelines outlined in the handout. Lastly, please make sure that your responses are clearly labeled (e.g. #1a, b, and c).1. A psychologist is interested in determining whether Drug A increases motor activity in rats relative to when they are not given Drug A (i.e., have not been given any drug at all).a. Briefly explain how the psychologist could setup an experiment to test this hypothesis.b. Identify the independent variable (IV) in this experiment.c. Is this an experimenter-manipulated or experimenter-selected IV?d. Identify the dependent variable (DV) in this experiment.e. Provide a specific operational definition for the DV. That is to say, how could the psychologist translate this variable into something that could be measured? 2. A psychologist is interested in determining whether hunger affects a person’s mood. a. State two different alternative hypotheses regarding this relationship. (Imagine that two psychologists have competing predictions. What hypotheses might they have? Do not state the null hypothesis. We are looking “alternative” hypotheses here).b. Select one of your hypotheses from a) and briefly explain how the psychologist could setup an experiment to test this hypothesis. (Be sure to indicate which hypothesis is being tested.)c. Identify the independent variable (IV) in this experiment. Is this an experimenter-manipulated or experimenter-selected IV?d. Identify the dependent variable (DV). Provide an operational definition for the DV (i.e., translate this variable into something that could be measured). 3. You are interested in determining whether an individual’s ability to communicate with others is affected by that individual’s gender.a. State a formal alternative hypothesis that could be used to test the relationship between these variables.b. Briefly explain how you could setup an experiment to test this hypothesis.c. Identify your independent variable (IV). Is this an experimenter-manipulated or experimenter-selected IV?d. Identify your dependent variable (DV).e. Provide an operational definition for your DV (i.e., translate this variable into something you could measure). 4. An experimenter was interested in the effects of reward and class standing on performance in basketball shooting. Ten college freshman and ten college seniors (neither of which had played basketball before) were selected for participation in this study. All participants completed three different conditions. For the first 10 shots (condition 1), participants earned 5 cents for each basket; for the next 10 shots (condition 2), they earned $1 per basket; for the final 10 shots (condition 3), they earned $5 per basket. The results indicated that all participants scored more baskets when given greater/higher rewards. In addition, freshman scored more baskets than did seniors. Finally, seniors’ performance improved to a greater degree than freshmen’s as reward level increased. a. What are the independent variables in this study? Are they experimenter-manipulated or experimenter-selected IVs?b. What is the dependent variable in this study? Identify the operational definition that is being used for the DV in this experiment.c. What is the most important confound in this experiment as it is described?d. What change could be made to the experimental design to control for this
