You must buy the stated package to have access to the online homework; hardcopy submitted homework is not acceptable! The Carey 8th Ed text used last fall is not acceptable. “Proteus Organic Model Kit" (recommended, though splitting one set with another student is okay) - available from Student Affiliates of the American Chemical Society, outside BU 415, 1st full week of classes. "Framework Molecular Models" are also acceptable. Chapters 13-25 will be covered this semester, with a few sections omitted.Co-requisite: 360 is a pre- or co-requisite of Chem 369 Organic Lab, but 369 is no longer a co-requisite of 360. This means you do not have to take 369 at the same time as 360, but if you are taking 369, you must have credit already or be taking 360 the same semester. If you drop 360, you must drop 369. We check!Background: I expect you to have a reasonable knowledge of the chemistry of the various functional groups that you studied in Chem 350; considerable review at the start of the semester is highly advised. Likewise, knowledge of such general chemical concepts as equilibrium, acidity, stereochemistry, reaction coordinates, etc. is assumed. I strongly suggest that as one part of this, you print and fill out the reaction map on Blackboard, which I used in Chem 350. The key to that map is also there, as well as thepKa table that's a subset of Table ##.Rules for missed exams: If you miss an exam, you must have a valid, verifiable excuse, presented to me within 24 hours. For an hour exam, if the excuse is accepted, your grade for that exam will be assigned based on your performance on the other hour exams, relative to the class average. If the excuse is not accepted, you will be assigned a zero on that exam. You cannot miss two hour exams and get credit for thecourse. If you are failing the course coming into the final, and you miss the final (even with a valid excuse), a grade of "F" will be assigned.Exam Re-grading: Arithmetic mistakes of addition or transferring points to the front page will be corrected anytime. For re-grading of an answer's content, the exam must be submitted no later than three class meetings after the exam is first returned, with the number of the question(s) to be regraded clearly marked on the top of the first page. DO NOT write anything else on the exam. Also, you need the feedback from how you did on a previous exam, to help you study for the next exam. If you don't pick up your previous exam by three class meetings after it is returned, I will deduct 5 points from that exam’s grade.Class Attendance. This is not a course that you can pass solely by reading the book. I expect attendance at all classes. I will sometimes make announcements in class regarding material to be covered, or exam content, or so forth, that you will be responsible for knowing.
