PSYCHOLOGY 210: Behavioral Neuroscience Fall 2016100 Gregory Hall; MWF 10 AMFaculty Office Phone e-mail Dr. Janice Juraska 509 Psychology 333-8546 [email protected]. Nu-Chu Liang 513 Psychology 244-7873 [email protected]. Monica Uddin (course coordinator) 3113 IGB or 527 Psych 300-0937 [email protected]. Roberto Galvez 2351 Beckman or 512 Psych 244-0391 [email protected] office hours: These will be announced by each instructor during their first lecture. Teaching Assistant: Sara Westbrook ([email protected]); office hours by appointmentWebsite: An Illinois Compass 2g website at https://compass2g.illinois.edu/ has been established for the course. The Illinois Compass 2g site contains lecture slide postings, required readings, practice exams, and a listing of your course point totals. You will need your Net ID and AD password to access the site. Required Reading: The readings for each instructor are on the Compass website under the instructor’s folder.Exams: Four non-cumulative, multiple-choice exams will be given. Three of these are during the regular class hour; the last exam is given during finals week. A single make-up exam – consisting of multiple choice, fill-in-the-blank, short answer, and/or short essay questions – is scheduled after each of the exams. The time and day of these make-up exams is given on the second page of this syllabus and is non-negotiable. Make-up exam policy: A make-up exam is possible if you are unable to take the regularly scheduled exam due to a severe illness or family emergency. If you feel you are eligible to take the make-up, you must notify the TA via email ([email protected]) within 48 hours of the regularly scheduled exam to explain your absence and request approval to take the make-up exam. You will receive a return email indicating if you are approved to take the make-up and where the test will be given. Failure to follow these rules or failure to show up for the scheduled make-up exam will result in a score of "zero" for the missed exam. In the rare instance that an extended illness causes you to miss both the regular exam and the make-up, you must present a letter from the Emergency Dean verifying that you were out of class for a valid reason for the period spanning the regular exam and the make-up and you must take a make-up exam as soon as possible after you return. IMPORTANT: During exams, you will be required to show your I-Card when you hand in your answer sheet. Grading: Each exam is worth 40 points, with 160 points available for the course. Your final course grade will be determined based on how many points you earned out of the total: A range = ≥ 90%; B range = 80-89%; C range = 70-79%; D range = 60-69%; and F = ≤ 59%. Plus and minus (+/-) grades will be assigned within these ranges. You CANNOTearn extra credit points by doing additional assignments (e.g., writing a paper, re-taking an exam, etc.). DRES accommodations: To insure that disability-related concerns are properly addressed, students who require assistance to participate in this class are asked to see the TA within the first two weeks of the semester and make arrangements for special accommodations through DRES (Division of Disability Resources and Educational Services). Academic honesty: Anyone caught cheating on an exam or helping another student cheat will receive a failing grade for the entire course. Students must be cognizant of this statement from the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences Student Handbook: “It is the responsibility of the student to refrain from infractions of academic integrity, from conduct that may lead to suspicion of such infractions, and from conduct that aids others in such infractions.” Safety: You should read the instructions for emergency situations at:http://police.illinois.edu/emergency-preparedness/Date Instructor Subject Aug. 22 Galvez Introduction/NeuroanatomyAug. 24 Galvez Neurons – how do they work?Aug. 26 Galvez Receptors and synaptic signalingAug. 29 Galvez Touch and PainAug. 31 Galvez MovementSept. 2 Galvez MovementSept. 5 Labor Day—No ClassSept. 7 Galvez Declarative MemorySept. 9 Galvez Declarative MemorySept. 12 Galvez Procedural MemorySept. 14 Galvez Wrap up and Review Sept. 16 Exam (Make –up at 7PM on Sept 26 ONLY if you are approved to take it)Sept. 19 Uddin GeneticsSept. 21 Uddin GeneticsSept. 23 Uddin Gene regulationSept. 26 Uddin EpigeneticsSept. 28 Uddin EpigeneticsSept. 30 Uddin StressOct. 3 Uddin StressOct. 5 Uddin PsychopathologyOct. 7 Uddin Psychopathology Oct. 10 Uddin Wrap up and Review Oct. 12 Exam (Make-up at 7 pm on Oct 24 ONLY if you are approved to take it)Oct. 14 Juraska Brain developmentOct. 17 Juraska Brain development Oct. 19 Juraska Brain damageOct. 21 Juraska Neurological disordersOct. 24 Juraska AgingOct. 26 Juraska SexOct. 28 Juraska SexOct. 31 Juraska SexNov. 2 Juraska SexNov. 4 Juraska Wrap up and ReviewNov. 7 Exam (Make-up at 7 pm on Nov 18 ONLY if you are approved to take it)Nov. 9 Liang VisionNov. 11 Liang Vision Nov. 14 Liang VisionNov. 16 Liang Biological clockNov. 18 Liang Sleep Nov. 21 - 25 Thanksgiving Vacation – no classes Nov. 28 Liang Sleep Nov. 30 Liang OlfactionDec. 2 Liang Olfaction & TasteDec. 5 Liang TasteDec. 7 Liang Wrap up and ReviewDec. 9 Exam (Mon, Dec 9 at 10 AM in Gregory Hall 100) (Conflict exam at 10AM on Dec
