Scripture Resounding An Essay on the Life and Work of Richard Hays A Paper Submitted to Dr Scot McKnight Northern Baptist Theological Seminary NT 401 Orientation to New Testament Studies Chaz Robbins October 14 2016 Robbins 2 Scripture Resounding An Essay on the Life and Work of Richard Hays I II III IV V VI VII VIII Introduction Biography Intertextual Studies Church as people of God Children of the Word not slaves Ethics Critiques Conclusion Robbins 3 I Introduction Kind words can be short and easy to speak but their echoes are truly endless Mother Teresa Richard Hays has devoted much of his scholarly work to listening deeply to the Old Testament echoes resounding through the writings of the New Testament His works are truly kind words spoken to the church that will have a lasting echo in how the church understands itself and moves forward as the people of God in the world The aim of Hays work is to inform the church of the grand story it is to be telling in the world by understanding the echo of the grander story from which it stems In order to understand how Hays accomplishes this aim it is important to understand a little about Hays background the faith perspective of Christian ministry from which he works An overview of the field of intertextual study will also be helpful to know where Hays fits in the larger discussion and from where he started to get the impetus of some of his ideas The most significant element of understanding Hays work is to have a firm grasp of how Hays views Paul s letter to the Romans He sees Paul s primary function in this letter as defining the church as the people of God When one dives as deeply into Paul s hermeneutic as Hays does the result is to begin to see the church more fully as children of the Word not slaves of it Lastly what is produced from such a thorough and comprehensive reading of the New Testament is a clear ethic that is to continually anchor the church II Biography It is possible to know what is in the Scriptures but
