“Filipina women are very strong. They’re making headway all around the world. You see Filipinas in government, you see Filipinas as head of businesses, you see Filipinas doing great things in the community and in society apart from being mothers, apart from being good sisters and, you know, good daughters; but sometimes you wonder, despite the success, despite the strength of the Filipina, bakit marami pa rin tayong nagiging problema specifically related to things like unwanted pregnancy?” was stated by Lalaine Chu-Benitez (2011). The Madonna-Whore Complex is a disorder that wasn’t directly mentioned in the documentary, but the conceptof it was present. The Madonna-Whore Complex is a disorder of men usually caused by cold mothers, making love and sex like water and oil. Most traditional Filipino men view women that commit premarital sex as sexually enticing but they prefer to marry women that are a virgin. Thefilmmaker served only as a medium for different men and women, with different personalities, beliefs, and experiences, to perceive one message. The documentary was aimed not only for women, but also men to see the side of women to better understand why things are the way they are. The idea was supported by statistics, personal anecdotes of OFW women, and personal beliefs of different Filipinas, a foreign manager, and Filipino immigrant. Filipinas, especially those working in Middle East, share how their traditional manners are misunderstood in the Middle East, like how being fragrant was mistaken as a sexual “come-on.” They showed statistics and experiences linking to poor sex education in the Philippines, mainly because of theChurch. Another is how Western influence has been degrading the real look of Filipina women. The potentiality of Filipina women is being hindered by cultural conflicts, one is the lack of sex education because of the Catholic culture of the Philippines, and another example is by the cultural view of Middle East to women. Almost everything was depicted in a fist person view. In my opinion, all arguments are sound except for one made by Yuri Cipriano about women fighting back. Women are physically weaker than men so by suggesting women to fight back totheir male oppressor might do more bad than good. Woman could easily lose a physical battle with the opposite sex and considering how low the respect of Middle East men has for women, they are not afraid to cause as much damage as possible. Open-minded people would find the documentary fine and might even be enlightened. Close-minded people might get offended but some of the personalities’ beliefs. Middle Eastern men would find it absurd on how much Filipinovalue their women and how we acknowledge their strengths. Some foreigners, with relationships with Filipinas, will understand how the stereotype is ruining their partner’s reputation. I agree with the thesis and all points given because it is hard to argue with reality. These people are sharing things that really happen, personal experiences, and it’s hard to disagree with several stories pointing to one point: Filipinas have potential, but it is being heavilyhindered by several cultural factors. Yes, Western influences are creeping into media and it’s giving a bad image to the cultural norms of today. They are blaming it along with the media on how the youth of today are, but they did not point out that parents could actually supervise their kids on what should be and what should not. They failed to point out on how it’s the parent’s lack of supervision that’s why the youth of today are what they are. The filmmaker used the method of interviewing people to speak of their experiences, beliefs, and statistics. It’s really effective because it’s very difficult to argue with actual statistics and experiences that depict reality. It’s difficult to contradict reality. The documentary was eye-opening, to actually hear out the women’s side of everything. I respect everyone’s views, beliefs, and ideas and it was natural of me to contradict some, but I respect them nonetheless. Hearing their stories was really something everyone should know before criticizing women about how they are. The documentary, in short, was something that should be slapped on the faces of everyone who criticizes women without knowing their side of the story. It’s not always their fault, sometimes it’s beyond their
