Art Appreciation 2011-12 Course Description Art Appreciation is a dual-credit class that is designed to introduce you to the visual arts. You will develop an understanding and appreciation of art history, art theory, and studio art. You must take the THEA and register through South Plains College to receive dual credit. Please remember this is a college level class and the expectations and work will reflect this. Course Goals At the end of this course each student should: -have an understanding of the position artists have had in history. -have an understanding of the role of artists in various cultures. -have an understanding of artist and artworks in contemporary society. -be able to identify a large range of artists, art styles, and artworks. -have developed the vocabulary necessary to discuss artworks. -have developed an appreciation and understanding of the process of creating artworks. -have an understanding of a variety of art media. Supplies You are required to pay a $10 art supply fee due the first week of school which will provide you with all the supplies used in class, including paper, paints, brushes, oil pastels, clay and much more. Additional required supplies you need to bring: - 9” x 12” Sketchbook - Box of 24 colored pencils or crayons - Regular pencil and pen - 3-ring binder with five dividers - Notebook paper Textbook: Discovering Art History (provided) Optional recommended supplies: -magic rub or pink pearl eraser - 2H, HB, 2B drawing pencils -kneaded eraser -handheld pencil sharpener -black felt-tip pen -scissors Classroom Expectations -You should be in your seat and ready to work when the bell rings. -You are expected to participate, and positively contribute to, all class discussions. -You are expected to work the entire class period. -You will use and clean all art materials properly. -Be courteous and respectful at all times. Cruel, harassing, or vulgar language will not be tolerated. -No cell phones. Failure to follow classroom expectations will result in the following: 1. Deduction in daily grade. 2. Lunch detention (30 minutes) and call to parent. 3. Office referral. (This is automatic for fighting and obscene language.) 4. Cell phones will be taken up. Tardy Policy Monterey tardy policy. Food and Drink You may have a bottle of water in your backpack. Grading See assignment calendar for due dates. All assignments are due when you walk into class. Late Work-20 points per class period. If you are absent (excused) it will be due the day you return to class. Daily Grades (25%) You will receive at least one daily grade per week. Daily grades will include: Class participation - You should participate in all class discussions in a positive manner. Studio projects - Grade will be based on effort and creativity. Additional homework and classroom assignments. Quizzes (25%) There will be three to four quizzes each six weeks. These will cover information from the textbook as well as any information given in class. Six Weeks Research (20%) You will complete a research paper each six weeks. Information will be given about each one near the beginning of each six weeks. Chapter Review Outlines (20%) Complete an outline for each chapter. These should be neatly hand written or typed. Sketchbook (10%) Each sketchbook assignment will be composed of a written paragraph and a drawing. Unless given a specific topic, the subject will be your choice. Extra Credit Extra credit may be applied to any grade except the final exam or research papers and cannot replace a zero. No more than 40 points total per six weeks. Art related article or comic: 5 points each. One page summary of an article about an artist: 20 points. Make-up Work It is very important that you attend class every day. You are responsible for making up all missed work. If you know you are going to be out you need to talk to me before you are gone. If it is an unexpected absence you should see me the day you return to school or email me. [email protected] Any absence that is not excused will result in a zero daily grade. Research Papers Research papers will not be accepted late. If you are going to be gone on the day a research paper is due, you need to turn it in before you leave. If it is an unexpected (excused) absence, you need to e-mail it to me or get someone to bring it to school. Quizzes All make-up quizzes will be given at 8:00 on the following Monday or Tuesday morning. Semester Exam Each semester exam will be comprehensive. Semester Grade 90% - Average of your three six-weeks grades. 10% - Semester Exam Academic Integrity You are expected to do your own work. Anything that you turn in for a grade should be your own work. This includes chapter reviews, outlines, quizzes, and research papers.Copying another student’s work will result in a zero for each student involved. Any form of cheating on a quiz or exam will result in a zero. In addition, any student caught, or suspected of, copying or cheating will have a conference meeting with a
