Noah EhrmanNoah EhrmanENGL1001 040Alan JozwiakSeptember 7, 2016Paper 1 – Modelling the Writing ProcessDepression – is depression a naturally occurring state and are we too quick to claim sadnessas a mental illness? There are two forms of depression to consider when looking at this topic. First, major depression, which is defined as “An illness that involves the body, mood, and thoughts and that affects the way a person eats, sleeps, feels about himself or herself, and thinks about things. Depression is not the same as a passing blue mood. It is not a sign of personal weakness or a condition that can be wished away.”1. Second, a state of feeling sad, commonly defined as “a medical condition in which a person feels very sad, hopeless, and unimportant and often is unable to live in a normal way.”2. In my case, being a nursing student, I understand depression to be a psychoneurotic illness typically known for feelings of lethargy, disinterest, disengagement and potential suicidal tendencies. I am particularly interested in this topic due to its general misunderstanding within society. Many people find that depression sufferers can only blame themselves for these feelings and that it is there responsibility to lift themselves out. This misunderstanding of how depression develops is the cause of these uneducated comments; depression in some cases is not caused by anything in particular but can be from an imbalance within the individual. 1Noah EhrmanDetermining the potential factors that may contribute to depression is an important step in educating the vast majority of the public who believe it is not an actual illness. Arguments that could support my claim that it is a serious mental illness are the numerous case studies of clinically depressed patients. One in particular marks the entire process from diagnosis to explanation of a woman named Leanne. Case studies provide medicalevidence that there are physical and mental symptoms and responses that occur due to depression. Similarly, possible personal accounts that can be found online or in academic journals that contain descriptions by sufferers on their own feelings and whether or not they can pinpoint the time or action that ‘caused’ their depression would support my claim that this is not a regular state that can be reached by anyone at anytime.Possible issues that accompany this topic are the nature of depression cases themselves. There is no generic brand of depression and every patient can exhibit different outward signs or other conditions and as a result it can be difficult to determine whether depression is present orcould the patient have a combination of other diagnosable disorders. From this topic I hope to further understand depression with greater amounts of information. I also hope to explain that depression is not a phase and can be a chronic mental illness lasting the rest of life. Although medications are prescribed to regulate chemical responses in the body; depression can grip patients for years. I believe this topic has the potential to fit very well in to academic writing pieces and provide a detailed overview of the illness. 2Noah Ehrman*http://www.medicinenet.com/script/main/art.asp?articlekey=2947 1*http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/depression
