Chem 333L Experiment 8 Post-Lab Observations The starting mixture appeared as a colorless liquid with a faint camphor odor. As the mixture was distilled, bubbling occurred throughout the mixture. As the distillation approached its final stages, the mixture turned a dark yellow color. Boiling Point The boiling point of the product, cyclohexene, was 82 C, rendering a 1.2% difference with the theoretical boiling point of cyclohexene. This indicates that the product was very close to what was expected. Percent Yield The mass of the cyclohexene was 3.244g, rendering a percent yield of 66.34%. Conclusion The goal of this experiment was to synthesize cyclohexene via acid catalyzed dehydration. The experiment was overall a success with a high percent yield and the purity was confirmed with a low percent difference between the boiling points. As an additional analysis of the integrity of the product, the IR analysis is shown below.IR Analysis Cyclohexanol Alcohol (-OH) ~3300 cm-1 Alkane (C-H) sp3 ~2900 cm-1Cyclohexene Alkane (C-H) sp3 ~2900 cm-1 Alkene (C-C) sp2 ~1650 cm-1 From the IR results, it can be seen that the product, cyclohexene, has lost the OH stretching that the alcohol starting material had. Also, the alkene C=C can be seen only in second graph. This proves that the experiment to synthesize cyclohexene from cyclohexanol was a success.
