The lecture schedule can be found on the last page of this syllabus.Course Website: All course materials are on the class website: http://compass2g.illinois.eduRegarding Emails: To ensure emails are noticed, send emails with subject title “Math 234: [topic]”ALEKS Testing and PlacementPlacement in this course requires a minimum score of 50% on a U of I ALEKS placement test, or aminimum score of 65% on the ALEKS PPL test. For details see http://math.illinois.edu/ALEKS.The deadline to acheive the minimum ALEKS score is January 23th, 2017.Important note: Not achieving the minimum ALEKS score by the deadline results in automatically beingdropped from the course. If you have been contacted by math advising about retaking the ALEKS test, youmust not ignore the email or you will be dropped. Such administrative drops are irreversible.1Course TextbooksThe following text is required:• Calculus with Applications, 11th Edition, Lial, Greenwell, Ritchey, Pearson, 2013, ISBN 978-0-321-74900-0. This version of the text includes a hard copy of the text along with access to MyMathLab.Earlier additions of the textbook are fine. If you have an earlier addition, you will need to purchaseyour MyMathLab access seperately from the bookstore• Online access to the text is provided if students wish to only purchase MyMathLab access - in thiscase, the text is only viewable while you are connected to the internet (you cannot download it).CalculatorsOnly basic non-graphing, non-programmable calculators are allowed for this course. You may use ap-proved calculators on groupwork, homework, quizzes, and exams. Please check with the instructor that yourcalculator is approved before the first exam. If you come to an exam with an unapproved calculator, youwill not be permitted to use it.HomeworkHomework will be done online using MyMathLab (www.mymathlab.com). Directions for logging in thefirst time can be found on the course website.Graded homework will be assigned every week covering last week’s material. Homework is due everyThursday evening at midnight. Late homeworks are not accepted for any reason; however, thelowest 2 homework scores will be dropped.In order to log into MyMathLab for the first time, you will need to ACCESS THE SITE THROUGHTHE COMPASS PAGE. You will also need your personal access code, which either comes with your text-book, can be purchased seperately at the bookstore, or can be purchased online with a credit card while youare trying to register.If you have technical problems with the MyMathLab system, call their Tech Support line at 800-677-6337before asking the professors for help. If you have mathematical problems, contact the professors or your TA.In addition, a list of practice problems from the book will be posted on the course website each week.These will not be graded, but provide extra practice for any student who would benefit from it.Group WorkGroup work will be an integral part of the twice weekly discussion sections. It will be graded entirelybased on participation. There are no make-up groupwork; however, the 3 lowest group workscores will be dropped.QuizzesThere will be a brief quiz given in sections every Tuesday (with the exception of test weeks). Thesequizzes will consist of 1 or 2 problems and should take fewer than 10 minutes to complete. There are nomake-up quizzes; however, the lowest 2 quiz grades will be dropped.2ExamsThere are three midterm exams for this course. They are evening exams, from 7 PM to 8pm, on:Exam 1 Wednesday, February 15thExam 2 Wednesday, March 15thExam 3 Wednesday, April 19thYou must bring a picture ID to all exams. A few days before each exam, an announcement willbe posted on the course website with information about where you are to go to write the exam.There will be no discussion sections on the Thursdays following the midterm exams.Make-up ExamsMakeup exams will only be given if you notify your instructor of a conflict before the exam andprovide justification for the conflict. For example, if the exam conflicts with another exam or class then acopy of your schedule and a letter from the instructor of the conflicting class would suffice. It is completelyup to the instructor’s discretion whether or not you will be allowed a make-up exam and whether or notthere will be any penalty assessed for your absence from the exam.Only one written makeup exam is offered for each exam. This makeup exam will take place at 7:45
