Exercise 1 Data Interpretation Dissolved oxygen is oxygen that is trapped in a fluid such as water Since many living organism requires oxygen to survive it is a necessary component of water systems such as streams lakes and rivers in order to support aquatic life The dissolved oxygen is measured in units of parts per million ppm Examine the data in Table 4 showing the amount of dissolved oxygen present and the number of fish observed in the body of water the sample was taken from finally answer the questions below Table 4 Water Quality vs Fish Population Dissolved Oxygen ppm 0 Number of Fish Observed 0 2 4 6 8 10 12 14 16 18 1 3 10 12 13 15 10 12 13 Questions 1 What patterns do you observe based on the information in Table 4 The pattern I observed is that the more dissolved oxygen that is in the water the more fish were observed As the parts per million of dissolved oxygen increased the number of fished observed increased 2 Develop a hypothesis relating to the amount of dissolved oxygen measured in the water sample and the number of fish observed in the body of water The number of fish observed in the water will increase with the amount of oxygen dissolved in the water increases because fish need oxygen to survive 3 What would your experimental approach be to test this hypothesis I would have three different tanks with different water qualities The first one would have 0ppm of dissolved oxygen the second 10ppm of dissolved oxygen and the third 18ppm of dissolved oxygen I would place 5 fish into each tank and see how their survival was at different water qualities This would show if fish need oxygen in their water to survive and that more oxygen helps their survival chances 4 What would be the independent and dependent variables 2013 eScience Labs LLC All Rights Reserved In this experiment the three water tanks at different water quality levels would be the independent variable The number of fish that survive in the tanks would be the dependent variable 5 What would be your control My control would be the tank with 0ppm dissolved oxygen It would be a negative control because none of the fish should be able to survive with no oxygen in the water 6 What type of graph would be appropriate for this data set Why I think a scatter plot graph would be appropriate for this data set It would show the correlation between high and low amounts of dissolved oxygen and the number of fish observed or living 7 Graph the data from the table 4 Water Quality vs Fish Population found at the beginning of this exercise 8 Interpret the data from the graph made in Question 7 This graph shows that there was a general increase in the fish observed when the amount of dissolved oxygen increased There was a slight decrease from 12ppm to 14ppm but this could have been from experimental error or it could suggest that there is a level that is a maximum for the fish 2013 eScience Labs LLC All Rights Reserved
