Prerequisites You must have a credit for Chem.102 (or 104) 2. Text Organic Chemistry, John McMurry, Eighth Edition Brooks/Cole Publishing Company. 3. Supplemental Study Guide and Solutions Manual for McMurry's Organic Chemistry, Susan McMurry Eighth Edition, Brooks/Cole Publishing Company. 4. Syllabus Chapter Title 1 Structure and Bonding 2 Polar Bonds, Acids and Bases 3 Alkanes and their Stereochemistry Examination 1 4 Cycloalkanes and their Stereochemistry 5 Stereochemistry 6 An Overview of Organic Reactions Examination 2 7 Alkenes: Structure and Reactivity 8 Alkenes: Reactions and Synthesis 9 Alkynes Examination 3 10 Organohalides 11 Nucleophilic Substitutions and Eliminations 17 Alcohols and Phenols Examination 4 18 Ethers, Epoxides, Thiols and Sulfides 5. Course Credit OWL Assignments = 100 points Four 100 points Examinations (50 minutes each) = 400 points Final Examination (120 minutes) = 200 points Total = 700 points6. Course Grade I will determine your course grade using the total number of points you earn out of the possible 700 points. Each examination will emphasize the material mostly covered since the previous examination. Final Examination is cumulative. 7. OWL Assignments Grades from all OWL Home Work problems and End of Chapter (EOC) problems will be scaled to 100 points. You need to submit all the assignments by due date. No exceptions will be made. 8. Make-up exams If you happen to miss an examination you should notify me the reason(s) within 48 hours. I will give make-up only for authorized or acceptable reasons. 9. Regrading If you have question concerning the grading of your examination, you must submit it without any modification for regrading stating your reason(s) within two days of the date it is returned to you. After two days all examinations are considered final. 10. Examination Schedule The following is a tentative, but reasonably accurate, schedule for the examinations. If I need to move an Examination, I will announce it at least 3 days in advance. The date for the final examination is firm and It is set by the university. Examination 1: September 26, Friday Examination 2: October 17, Friday Examination 3: November 14, Friday Examination 4: December 5, Friday Final Examination: December 12, Friday 10:00 a.m. - 12: 00 noon 11. Lecture notes My lecture notes are available at Texas A & M Book store and copy corner. This provides only an outline, and you should not take it as a substitute for the complete coverage in the text. I also included in this, examinations from Fall 2012. These will serve as a guide. The examinations you may receive this semester need not be similar to these in style or difficulty. 12. Help sessions There will be a help session on Wednesday (of most of the weeks) 7:00 - 8:00 p.m. in Room 2104. In addition, we will have Exam Review at 7:30 – 8:30 p.m. on the following four Thursdays in Room 100. 1) Thursday, September 25 2) Thursday, October 16 3) Thursday, November 13 4) Thursday, December 414. Individual help You can get individual help during my office hours or by appointment. Please feel free to contact me at any time to discuss organic chemistry, and your progress in chemistry 227. Office Hours: Monday: 9:10 - 10:10 a.m. Tuesday: By appointment Wednesday: 11:20 a.m. - 12:20 p.m. and 4:00 – 5:00 p.m. Thursday: 3:00 – 4:00 p.m. Friday: 9:10 - 10:10 a.m. & 4:00- 5:00 p.m. 15. Academic Integrity Cheating in the examinations will not be tolerated. Always remember and practice the Aggie code of Honor. “An Aggie does not lie, cheat, or steal or tolerate those who do.” 16. Students with Disability If you believe you have a disability requiring an accommodation, please contact the Department of Student Life, Services for Students with Disabilities in Cain Hall, suite B 118 or call 845 - 1637. 17. Use of Cell Phone and Computer It is strictly prohibited in class because using these is distracting your classmates as well as me. 18. Comments about studying for the course There are three most important things you need to do to succeed in this class. 1. Attend all classes. I often present information in class that is not available in the text or the notes and I will test you on them. 2. Get off to a good start: Future efforts will prove difficult if you do not establish a solid understanding of the basics. 3. Work the assigned problems: They will provide you with additional opportunities to apply the concepts and principles that we discuss in class. Do not use the manual unless you have made a reasonable attempt at the problem(s) beforehand. 19. Important note I want your work in this course to be a challenging, rewarding and pleasant experience. As your instructor, I wish to be of assistance to you in any and every way that I can.
