Understanding how communicable illness work is essential to protecting against the spreading of such illnesses.2© Cengage LearningThis is a visual aid for understanding the relationship between the 3 required components of communicable illnesses.3Preventing the spread of communicable illnesses is an ethical responsibility of teachers. You must be aware of the protocols and procedures in place to support these efforts.4When working with children still wearing diapers sanitary practices must reflect safety protocols to prevent fecal-oral transmission. If children are potty trained, hand washing practices must be modeled, taught, and supported to limit the possibility of fecal-oral transmission. Teachers must model and support children in learning to cough/sneeze into the elbow rather than the hands, to wash hands after blowing noses, going to the bathroom, and before and after meals. These practices must be rehearsed and modeled frequently. Hand washing must be taught. Working with children increases risk of exposure to illness and to a population with weakened immune systems. There are also some fun activities to teach children about spreading germs. Think about how quickly a little glitter can spread on our bodies, to one another, and around the room…this can be a great visual clue for kids to understand why hand washing is so important!10Photo: © Cengage LearningCleaning protocols should be clearly explained and materials should be kept in a safe location away from children. Make sure to train all staff of cleaning procedures.11Do not forget about outdoor spaces and possible concerns. Sand boxes must be covered and cleaned to prevent the potential hazard of animal feces. 12It is important to know the policy for your center regarding illness. When is a fever high enough to warrant sending a child home. When is a cough just an everyday cold that is a part of childhood. Make sure to educate parents and families as well on the policies. Teachers need to also consider their own health. Working while sick only increases the likelihood of spreading the
