Lecture 13 The Neutralization of Guilt- Sykes and Matza theory is not exactly learning theory. It associates with both Sutherland's Differential Association Theory and Learning Theory.- Sutherland - Criminal values- Delinquent Valueso Excitement, thrills, kicks Breaking law itself is thrilling. It is fun to be chased by the police.o Drifting and Grandiose dreams conspicuous consumptiono aggressiveness and violence To show they are badasses Subterranean values- Mainstream Middle-Class Valueso value excitementso Discipline, routine, standardization the virtue of worko Protestant ethico professionalism, softness and peace emotions or any kind should not be expressed- Subterranean Valueso "Values … which are in conflict or in competition with other deeply held values but which are still recognized and accepted by many."o leisure class: personal quality - beauty it describes leisure class and also high school students- There is no such thing as o delinquency have respect to people in the mainstreamo the juvenile delinquents feel guilty for what they have done. They have internalized their value about the mainstreamo If the bad things make the juvenile delinquency feel shame and guilty, then why did they do bad things at the first place? They employed five techniques of neutralization to eliminate the feeling of guilt.- Techniques of Neutralizationo Denial of Responsibility the person says he acted because he had no choice the study done in a hit man, the guy who kills people for living. He called himself "hired gun". He claimed that he is not responsible for the death of people. Those people who paying him are the ones making him kill and they are the one responsible for the murder. positivism does not really explain behavior as a choice.o Denial of Injury redefines the criminal act as something that is not criminal which is not offense the law. (ie. stealing - borrowing) mala in se: absolutely bad (ie. murder, robbery, rape, etc) mala prohibita: bad simply because the law says it's bad and the law is constantly changing. If the law can change, then I can change it tooo Denial of the Victim if the victim is unknown or unseen - "there is no victim" (ie. people who spread the internet viruses) he sees himself as a victimo Condemnation of the condemner You are doing the same thing so I don't need to feel guilty from you. o Appeal to Higher Loyalties- Time Ordero There is "reason to believe" that the techniques of neutralization "precede deviant behavior and make deviant behavior
