Lecture 9 Urban Disorganization and Crime- Social life in the inner zone is corrupted and most people are trying to move out- The task of making a sociological model is to develop later theorems- Shaw and McKay - Social disorganization refers to the inability of a community structure to realize the common values of its residents and maintain effective social controls. (Sampson and Groves)- The only assumption concerning consensus that is necessary … is that citizens of American communities desire to live in residential communities that are relatively free from the threat of serious crime. (Bursik and Grasmick)- Living in a stable place is something that all people and all communities value- Three levels of social controls which may or may not happening in communitieso what social control is? actively preventing crime with a particular areao Private level of control Focuses on the networks that integrate residents into the intimate informal primary groups of a neighborhood.  people in face to face interaction takes place between families, friends, etc. (people that already know one another)o Parochial Level of Control represents interpersonal networks in which communication among the members of the system does not have the same degree of intimacy as at the private level within organizations, people maintain orders. directed toward outsiders. people take actions to prevent people from outside of the organization to commit crime- Sampson and Groves' Social Disorganization and Crime Model- there are two variableso Exogenous variables what get things started communities, physical, and social characteristics allow for or cause social disorganization people are pooro intervening variables what then directly cause or trying to explain, in the case, crime and delinquency Sparse local friendship networks Dense social networks: everybody knows everyone else directly- Private social control is weako We don't care about what strangers are doing but we care about what our friends are doingo In a disorganized community, people don't really know one anothero In a disorganized neighborhood, gangs are allow to formo Crime takes place in groups- Interstitial groupso gangs fit within the gaps of in a social structure- Materialist Fallacyo direct effectso indirect effects- people don't get married in poor communities, high rate of single mom- cultural disorganization- Crime is allowed to happen because nothing control
