SPH-H263: Personal HealthAlcoholBinge drinking – raises BAC (Blood Alcohol Concentration) to 0.08% or more- In 2 hours, male binge-drinkers consume 5 or more drinks- Females consume 4 or more drinksBAC – ratio of alcohol to total blood volume- Men: alcohol / 0.7 x weight- Women: alcohol / 0.6 x weightWhy can men consume more alcohol than women? Because men have higher total blood volume.- Therefore, women can become drunk quickerStandard drink – 0.6 ounces of pure alcohol- 12 oz. beer- 5 oz. wine- 1.5 oz. distilled liquors (gin, rum, vodka, whiskey)Binge drinking -- #1 cause of preventable death among undergraduates- Responsible for 9 deaths per hour!- Most common in the Midwest states and New England statesRisks of Binge Drinking:- Car accidents- Violence- HIV and other sexually-transmitted diseases- Unplanned pregnancy- Fetal Alcohol Syndrome- Alcohol
