Slide 1OverviewOverviewOverviewPROBABILITY AND STATISTICS IN COMPUTER SCIENCE AND SOFTWARE ENGINEERING Chapter 9: Statistical Inference1OVERVIEWLast time, we discovered the P-Value and saw how to draw conclusions about the level of significance of the test based upon an observed test statisticWe then went on to explore how to do statistical inference for varianceWe saw that the estimator for variance, namely was unbiased and consistent, but not Normal. We saw how to create a test statistic that is best described by a chi-squared distribution•42OVERVIEWUsing the chi-squared distribution, we were able to create confidence intervals for our variance estimatorsThis was different than confidence intervals we had seen before, because the distribution for chi-squared is not symmetricWe need to find the critical values for both sidesIt was easy to derive the confidence interval for standard deviation from here3OVERVIEWIn this lecture, we will complete Chapter 9 by looking at:How to conduct tests for varianceHow to find P-Values for these tests and draw conclusionsHow to compare two variances using the F-distributionWe will use these tools to show how to create a confidence interval for the ratio of two population variancesWe will then look generally at applying F-tests to compare population
