Republic party formed against slavery. People find problems in the development of the north. It’s a sectional party. - the north is continuing to produce and industrial society- radical abolitionist most committed to abolition of slavery and gender inequality. Go through the 1830s and begin to gaintraction with more people because of the expansion of the south.- 1839 radical abolitionists decide they might be able to form a political party. The liberty party is the political formation of theabolitionists. By forming this they have to give up the more radical aspects of their society. Drop the commitment to genderequality. There are people in oppose to slavery, but not for gender equality. To get more votes, must drop the idea of gender equality. (extraneous issues)- slave power: (come up by the liberty party) slave owners have too much power. Seen in all levels of society. Slave owners get more political power depending on how many slaves they have.- Politically, socially, and economically too much power. How can people with no slaves compete with slave owners.- Liberty party: The constitution is actually an anti-slavery document. It’s a pro slavery document.- They argued you have to consider the intention of the founding fathers and the opening of the declaration of independence.- Important for the liberty party to get the constitution on their side- Problem with America is being created by immigrants- 1830s economy collapse. Recovered later and workers went back to work with half of their previous wage. They tried organizing labor unions and striking now that the capitalists are making money again. The capitalist system started using immigrants from Ireland and Germany for cheap labor.- 1846 in Ireland potato famine. All the potatoes died and peoplestarted to starve. A million Irish flood into America for labor. - Native born workers made the secret party the star spangled banner. If asked if they were apart of the group they would say “I know nothing” getting their name of the know nothing party.- 1846, we negotiated by treaty for british to give up claims of Oregon.- 1846-1847 the Mexican American war- Free soil party - sub party formed in 1848. Think that there should be no slavery in the new territories. Farmers/northern farmers should be most interested in this. Party mainly made up of farmers- David Wilmot is very important in terms of the formation of thefree soil party. He is a congressman from Pennsylvania - 1848-1849 got population growth because of the gold rush andwas able to apply to apart of the union as a free
