Study Guide Final Exam – TUESDAY/THURSDAY SECTION - Spring 2015Final Exam is at 3 p.m. May 5th in our classroomSexuality (Ch. 9)Fam Serv 1010 1st EditionFinal Exam Study Guide LecturesStudy Guide Final Exam – TUESDAY/THURSDAY SECTION - Spring 2015 Final Exam is at 3 p.m. May 5th in our classroomThe exam is NOT cumulative. The exam will be 50 questions worth 2 points each for a total of 100 points. All the questions are multiple choice or T/F. There are no short answer or short essay questions. This test has a fair amount of material taken from the readings. Some of the readings we did not cover in class, but you ARE responsible for this material on the exam. Jealousy (Ch. 10; pages 305-323; 328-334):- Reactive jealousy vs. Suspicious jealousy: what are they, examples of them, how are they different?- Who is more likely to be a jealous person? What type of person gets us jealous? What are the traits of a rival (mate value) that bother us?- What is jealousy? What is a key factor in jealousy? What is envy? - How do attachment styles relate to jealousy?- What is the purpose of being jealous or why do we get jealous? (several reasons)- What is a commonly found gender difference in reactions to sexual versus emotional infidelity? How do researchers explain this difference, what is it men are concerned about vs. women? What is one concern with the major study by Buss that is credited for uncovering this difference?- What does the book suggest are ways to cope constructively if you happen to be jealous?- What is mate poaching (TEXT BOX)? Does this happen frequently or not? Who might poach (traits), when does it work best?Social Cognition (Ch. 4 pages 105-123):- What is the primacy effect?- What are the main findings from the “Hannah” study?- What is confirmatory bias, know an example. What does it do to the accuracy of our beliefs?- Who is the best predictor of whether our relationships might last? The text in Ch. 14 talks about 2 big categories (cognitive and behavioral maintenance mechanisms). Know these and the examples they list under each category.- Commitment in Ch. 6: discusses 3 views or models. What are they, what are the components of each (or examples of each)Breaking up (Ch. 13 pages 408-416):- What is the barrier model of relationship dissolution? What does this idea say for why westay or why we leave a relationship? - Break up strategies (4): provide and/or recognize EXAMPLES (pg. 408)- Sbarra & Emery study (with beepers): general findings about the fluctuation of our emotions after a break up, do they change, stay the same?- Adjusting after a break up: are break ups as bad as we think? What coping is best, rumination or reflection?- What are 4 general summations about how relationships end? (gender differences for the profile of violence)- What did Julia Wood’s interviews of jailed abuser reveal about their beliefs on abusing their partners? (under rationales of violence)- Class activity MVP: What is the Bystander Effect? Why does this play a role in preventing violence of all types? What are some ways in which we may blame a victim—things we might say or do to a person? How do words have power?- Key points or ideas from the TED talk we watched.Sexuality (Ch. 9)- What are the 3 factors determining sexual frequency (in committed relationships)? - How does the text describe our attitudes about casual sex and how those have changed over the years? What is the current typical attitude?- How do the attitudes towards sex of Americans compare to those in other countries? Arewe conservative or more liberal?- What is our current attitude toward homosexuality? What influences this view?- What do researchers know about the relationship between sexual frequency and sexual satisfaction?- What is sociosexual orientation and how might that influence sexual behavior?- What does the text discuss on extradyadic affairs (infidelity)? Are they common?- What are the various factors influencing unsafe sex (pg. 292-294) discuss several in detail. Know the definitions of those terms (e.g., illusion of unique vulnerability, pluralisticignorance, etc.)- What are some of the areas we see clear gender differences on in sexual desire?
