HST 010 1st Edition Lecture 24Outline of Last Lecture The rise of the USSR, Nazi Germany, and other nationalist states such as Italy are described.Outline of Current Lecture This lecture, our final, covers the course of WWII from beginning to end In the Far East, Mediterranean, Atlantic, and Pacific. Key events, figures, and locations are mentioned. Current LectureJapan and militaristic ultra-nationalism- Effects of the Depression- Militarism, military expansionism and WWIIo Invasion of Manchuria (1931) and established puppet Empire under former emperoro State of Manchuko (1932)- Attempted military coup of naval officers, 1932 (fail and many commit seppuku- Invasion of China, 1937- Chinese Nationalist efforts to destroy Communists, 1930-4o Mao’s leadership during the Long March, 1934- “Rape of Nanking” is the worst atrocity against China, 1937-38- The Greater East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere o Japan wants Asia to be under their military power- Japan has a great weakness which a lack of petroo Needs to find new outlets of Petroleum, looks at South East Asiao This puts Japan at odds with the Dutch, French, and British- Japan attacks Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7 1941 enters the war against Japan and Germany (inthat order)The Second World War- Second World War went from 1937 or 39 to 1945- One of the leading cause is the aggressive expansionism of Nazi Germany and the Japanese Empire- Nazi Germany’s desire to create Lebenstraum and a New Order (Blonde Hair Blue eye)- Japan wanted a Japanese East Asian EmpireThese notes represent a detailed interpretation of the professor’s lecture. GradeBuddy is best used as a supplement to your own notes, not as a substitute.o Also the need for oil thwarted by US- Japan Invades China in 1937 which begins the second sino-japanese war (1937-45- Germany invades Poland, 1939, and Poland is partitioned between Germany and the USSR (Non-Aggression pact between the two)- Germans invade Scandinavia, Netherlands, Belgiums, and France, by 1940 via Blitzkrieg (lightning war)- France divided into occupied north and collaborationist south (Vichy Regime under Marshal Henri-Philippe Petain- The Blitz and Britain, summer of 1940o Britain alone at this point against the might of Germanyo Winston Churchill was very much responsible for Britain fighting so hardo Britain suffered massive bombingo Britain is being helped by the US supply wise (economically)- Germany turns its attention to the USSR in 1941 and invades during operation Barbarossao This was Germany’s biggest mistakeo Stalin new Germany was coming despite the non-aggression pact and had preparedo Germany attacked Leningrad and Moscow but could not take the cities.o The Russian winters also slowed them greatly- Talks about the “Final Solution to the Jewish Question”o Germany had sent its Jews to Poland but no longer had anywhere to send its Jews, and in 1941 the initiation of the Holocaust occurred- Japan attacks the US in 1941 (Japan campaign)o Not just Pearl Harbor, Philippineso Japan did not want a war with the US (hoped to crush navy and make a peace) o US enters war against Japan and Axis Powers and the US, with assistance from mostly Australia till 1945o US would begin to push East and perform an Island hopping campaigno Mostly US navy and Marines, incredibly costly (Japan wanted to make it as costly and difficult as possible)o This savagery would increase racism against Japanese (war without mercy)o Encouraged the US of the Atomic bomb in the Summer of 1945 An effort to take the Island would have been so costly that nuking them may have been a better plan (Aug. 6 and 9)o Ended WWII on Aug. 14o Unconditional surrender- Battle of Stalingrad occurs for Germany against Russia from 1942-43o After Germanys defeat, Russia goes on the offensive- Allies invade Italy after the Africa campaigno Italy Fascist government quickly is taken, Italy is still large theater as German forces stay behind- D-Day occurs on June 6, 1944 (Allied invasion of Normandy Beach)- Soviets attack Manchukuo in Aug of 1945- WWII helped make US a super power, war brought it out of the depression (Soviets are the other- This is the end of the old Empireso Britain begins to let go of its mandates between the 40s and 60s- Germany Reich and Japan Empire are defeated- Post colonial era, but polarized era between US and
