Desertions they left their post 100,000 troops left felt the need to go home and helpVI. Why the South Lost the War: What Historians Say weaker power CAN win the war if they drag it out A. Was the South Overpowered Economically? Yes, the north has the advantage We know for a fact that the southern army always had enough weapons B. Was the South Overpowered Militarily?C. War Weariness, Loss of Morale, & Loss of Will to Fight Seeing everyone diedD. South Could Have Won They came very close to winning the war The south could have won, they look at certain turning points in the war If this would happen here and here then they could’ve won : what went wrong there?VII. Legacies of the Civil WarA. 620,000 Deaths Only died from conflict, many died from diseases Higher than every other war in American history combines 350,000 North 250,000 SouthB. South Devastated Mainly fought in the southC. Slavery Abolished  Most famous legacy SLAVERY IS OVER During the immediate years after the 13th amendment abolishes slavery throughout the nation D. States’ Rights & the Union That states are subordinate to federal governmentE. Myth of the Lost Cause The years after the southerners begin to put a spin on the civil war: entailed that the southern fight was a just cause against the aggressive north who was infringing on their liberties, not slavery Minimizes the issue of slavery bringing on the war  Southerners were right to defends and fighting for a good cause they said  They were led by Christian generals Robert ELee and stonewall US Grant had no talent and butcher of men Also argues that the south could not have won the war and that implies that mistakes were made  This is alive and well
