PSYX 100 1st Edition Lecture 28 Outline of Last Lecture I Problems of Gender Stereotypes II Sexual Orientation Outline of Current Lecture I Personality II Psychodynamic Theory Current Lecture I II Personality a Personality is made up of the characteristic patterns of thoughts feelings and behaviors that make a person unique it arises from within an individual and remains fairly constant throughout life b The definition of personality depends mainly on the theorist BUT there are two major characteristics i Consistency shared human nature ii Distinctiveness individual differences iii Overall aim we all share characteristics of human nature yet also possess individual differences c Our personalities i Impact our behaviors and actions ii Has multiple expressions thoughts feelings close relationships social interaction Psychodynamic Theories a Psychoanalytic theory i Sigmund Freud ii Two key assumptions 1 Psychic determinism behavior is never accidental 2 Unconscious determines our actions iii Freud divided mental processes into 3 levels each varying in terms of its accessibility 1 Conscious our immediate awareness These notes represent a detailed interpretation of the professor s lecture GradeBuddy is best used as a supplement to your own notes not as a substitute 2 Preconscious thoughts that we can easily bring into immediate awareness 3 Unconscious threatening material that is actively maintained below consciousness dreams and free association iv Anatomy of the mind three structures id ego superego 1 Id contains all inherited material instincts a Basis of personality b Pleasure principle seeks immediate tension reduction c Primary process thinking ignores reality and attempts to satisfy needs irrationally 2 Ego operates in reality and unconscious a Must alternate between attending to survival and finding appropriate outlets for tension reduction b Operates on the reality principle delays gratification 3 Superego moral component a Emerges from the ego around 5 years old b Freud s conflict theory i Conflict battles between the id ego and superego ii Sources of drive sex and aggression iii Anxiety long term conflict between the id ego and superego 1 Defense mechanisms unconscious reactions that protect a person from anxiety
