Recycling Persuasive Speech Outline: Mackenzie Tucker 4/15/15Attention Grabbing Device: Did you know that the average American generates over 4 pounds oftrash every day and about 1.5 tons of solid waste per year. Also that over 75% of this trash is recyclable but we as Americans only recycle about 30% of our trash. (https://www.dosomething.org/facts/11-facts-about-recycling)Introduction of Topic: Recycling is something that most Americans choose to ignore. Recycling -helps to save the environment by reusing trash to make new products. This helps reduce the amount of trash that rots in a landfill. Credibility Statement: My family has been recycling for the past 10 years. They pay extra for a recycling trash can that is picked up every week like a normal trash can. Thesis Statement: Recycling is important to do every day because it helps with getting rid of pollution and stops from landfill build up.Preview: I will discuss today the problem of trash build up in our country. I will tell you about how recycling helps stop the problem of landfill overage. Then I will show you what you can do as a college student to help the environment by recycling. Transition Statement: Next, I will describe the problems of not recycling and how to fix it. II) BodyA. Problem: People choose not to recycle which harms the environment that we live in. 1) Sub Point: We face a huge problem with a lot of trash build up in the United States.a) Oceanographers and ecologists recently discovered that about 70% of marine debris actually sinks to the bottom of the ocean. http://education.nationalgeographic.com/education/encyclopedia/great-pacific-garbage-patch/?ar_a=1 This is the cause of all the trash build up harming marine life. b) The trash build up is getting so bad that we are having to shut down landfills one per day, because people are not recycling and the capacity of trash in the landfillsis too much. 2) Sub point Natural Resources are being used upa) Enormous numbers of trees are cut down and rainforest disappeared fast. (D. Jensen, author of Deforestation threatens the Environment, republished in 2009 says “Two and a half acres of forest are cut every second.”)b) We just have limited amount of crude oil. (National assessment of US oil and gas resources written by National Oil and Gas resources Assessment team published in 1995, “crude oil will be exhausted in 60 years in this fast pace world of today”.)B. Cause: Recycling helps with the problem of trash build up in landfills. 1) Sub point- When you recycle more it saves natural resources and help stop pollution.a) Humans throw away 5 billion pounds of trash every year. (YouTube, reading rainbow recycling). If you recycle it cuts down of this number a whole lot. C. Solution: Recycling just takes effort. Here are different ways in which you can recycle andstop the trash from building up. 1) Sub point: Ways to recycle and save the environment as a college student at UA a) Use reusable water-bottles like camelbacks instead of plastic water bottles. Also ditch using plastic bags and start using reusable grocery bags. http://college.usatoday.com/2011/10/20/daily-tips-for-college-students-to-save-the-environment/These simple steps can save so much trash from being built up and causing harm to the environment. b) If you live off campus house then get a recycling bin to recycle or if you apartment has the option to recycle trash (Crimson Student Living has this option). Then throw away the correct trash into the recycling can. 2) Sub Point: Ways to recycle by using gasoline in a car.a) Instead of driving by yourself to something or to class carpool with a friend to save gas. b) Another way to use less gasoline and help recycle is to get a hybrid car or even anelectric car it really benefits overall.3) Sub point: You know what recycle materials you need to save because of all the lessons from school and lifea) There are many kinds of recyclable materials as you can think easily.Transition Statement: Lastly, recycling benefits our world overall. Conclusion: Recycling is something that benefits everything especially the planet we live on. By recycling we are stop the buildup of trash and saving more natural resources. Today I talked to you about the buildup of trash in landfills, how recycling stops the problem of landfill build-up and ways that you can recycle. Recycling is one of the best things we can do to have save our planet. The more people that take the time to recycle, the more natural resources we will not have to use.
