Lincoln Becomes the President Nov. 1860 Lincoln wins  The republican capture both houses of congress as well  He carried 0 southern states, elected without one southern electoral vote The south has become irrelevant in presidential elections  Republicans can elect presidents at willReassures Southerners- Lincoln ”I am not slave threat to slavery where it already exists”- He was even willing to support a amendment where it already existsLincoln’s Promises not Enough- But a plank in platform he did not want to see slavery spread into territory- Every territory that comes a state is a free state and gives republicans more power in the national government - Now that they control two branches it’s is only a matter of time before they control the third branch - Means that republicans can pass whatever they law they want C. South Carolina Leads the Way (Dec. 20, 1860) They hold a convention, they have one issue to decide on whether not to leave the union They all vote to leave the Union Frist to secede the union 2. Lower South Secedes TX,LA,MS,AL,FL,GA,SC3. Confederate States of America (Feb. 4, 1861) They send delegates to Montgomery, AL These 7 states make their own country Hold elections and write a constitution and form their own countryJefferson Davis (MS)- First and only president of the confederate states of america4. Conditional and Unconditional Unionists They had a strong attachment to the Union Took the US constitution and made word for word except for the articles about slavery Unconditionally Unionist: southerners who would remain loyal to the union no matter what, there loyalty was unconditional, north of the south where slavery was not as prevalent and not as dominate.  Conditional Unionist: resided in the border states - Slavery must be protected where it exists- Feds could not you cohesion against the states that have seceded can’t expect a southern state to fight against another southern stateD. The Search for Compromise1.
