SWSS 2 1st EditionFinal Exam Study Guide “Out of the Classroom and Into the Streets”:FINAL EXAM INFORMATIONSWSS 2 Foundations of Social WorkPlease choose ONE of the following four options for your final exam. You will see that each option has an experiential component and a written component. You don’t need to let me know ahead of time which of these you are choosing. However, whichever you select, please be sure I have the written part no later than MIDNIGHT on MONDAY, MAY 4 -- you can either leave it in my mailbox in the Social Work Department (443 Waterman), or (preferred) email it to [email protected]. I will send you my comments and your exam grade via email. This final exam is worth 15% of your course grade.Final Exam Option #1:The 3 Squares Challenge. According to their website, Hunger Free Vermont is “an education and advocacy organization with the mission to end the injustice of hunger and malnutrition for all Vermonters.” Their campaign called “The 3 Squares Challenge” seeks to “draw attentionto the experience of living on a strict food budget allotment and how that may or may notchange your daily life both physically and psychologically as a participant.” People participating in this challenge agree to spend one week eating on the average 3 Squares Benefit -- $36 for a single person, or approximately approximately $1.72 per meal.Final Exam 3 Squares Assignment: First, familiarize yourself with the issue of hunger in Vermont by reading the article “Food Insecure Vermonters at All-Time High” (7Days, 10/8/14, available at These notes represent a detailed interpretation of the professor’s lecture. GradeBuddy is best used as a supplement to your own notes, not as a substitute.http://www.sevendaysvt.com/vermont/food-insecure-vermonters-at-all-time-high/Content?oid=2452759).Then check out the website for Hunger Free Vermont, www.hungerfreevt.org, and learn about this organization. Sign up to participate in the 3 Squares Challenge on the website -- you can choose any seven days between now and ending on Sunday, May 3. Please keep a journal during your week: begin your journal with a brief reflection about the 7Days article, and then each day, record your specific spending AND make a note of something that stood out to you about your experience that day. At some point during the week, please check out the 3Squares Challenge Facebook Page at https://www.facebook.com/3SquaresVTChallenge, and consider how your experience compares to that of others who have taken this Challenge. Upon your completion of the Challenge, please write a three page reflection paper aboutyour experience. What were your expectations, going into this Challenge? What about your experience surprised you? What stood out to you about the experiences of others, as portrayed on the Challenge Facebook page (please share a specific example of this)? And finally, how have you been changed by this experience? The benefit of this assignment to you will be the greatest if you genuinely make and keep a commitment to stay within the 3 Squares Budget. Please turn in your journal (with the account of your specific spending and daily notes), and three page final reflection paper,as your final exam assignment. Important note: During the week, you might be able to benefit from free food that is offered around campus, or be offered a meal by family or friends. That’s great! HOWEVER, if you do make use of free food sources, please research, and include in your paper, some information about specifically where and when free food sources are available in Burlington that might be used to supplement a 3 Squares budget.Final Exam Option #2:The COTSWalk. We know COTS from our field trip to the WayStation earlier this semester; here is an opportunity to support their work. COTS is holding it’s annual COTSWalk on Sunday, May 3, at 2 p.m. According to the COTS website, “The annual COTS Walk is a 3-mile trek around downtown Burlington starting from Battery Park, following the route a personwho is homeless might travel to receive shelter and services. This is the one day of the year that we open our shelters to the community so people can see how their pledges are put to use.” This year, organizers expect 1,500 walkers, and have a goal to raise $175,000.Final Exam COTSWalk Assignment: First, inform yourself about the COTSWalk by going to the COTS website, www.cotsonline.org. To register for the Walk, follow this link, which will bring you to the Team page for the UVM Dept. of Social Work: http://www.firstgiving.com/team/289716. Follow instructions to register for the walk asa member of our team, and to create your own on-line fundraising page. Alternatively, you could do your fundraising off-line, using the pledge materials provided by COTS; please let me know if this is your preference, and I will give you a packet. And then, begin your fundraising! Actually gathering pledgesfor your walk is part of this assignment -- we have a $2,000 goal for the SocialWork Department, which will be matched by an anonymous donor if we reach it! — but there is no minimum pledge required for your participation in this final exam option. Then, actually participate in this fundraising and educational event on 5/3. Afterwards, please write a three-page paper about your experience. What were your expectations? How did your experience match (or not) your expectations? What stood out to you? What was it like to ask people for pledges? What do you think you’ll always remember about this experience? Please end your paper by sharing a SPECIFIC story of something that you witnessed, or something that happened to you, during this Walk, that made a particular impression on you. Please turn in your three page reflection paper (including a specific story about your experience) as your final exam assignment.Final Exam Option #3:The Take Back the Night March and Rally. Every year, in communities around the world, “Take Back the Night” marches and rallies are held to call for an end to sexual violence in all forms. As part of Sexual Violence Awareness Month activities in Burlington, the 2015 Take Back the Night march and rally will be held on Thursday, 4/16, beginning at 5:30 at the Royal Tyler Theater Plaza. According to the “UVM Bored” calendar, “Join the Women’s Center in listening to their keynote speaker who will rally with efforts to fight against sexual violence. Honor the victims in our
