Psych 370 1st Edition Lecture 18Current LectureMaslow - Overview of Maslow o Individual Differences – individuals differ in their position on the need hierarchy, self actualized people develop unique potentials o Adjustment – most people have unmet needs, on a few people reach self actualization o Cognition – self actualized people perceive the world accurately and are creative o Society and Culture – a better society can be imagined particularity one that fosters development o Biology – biological motivations are the foundation of personality o Development – few adults develop to their full potential but changes in society and the workplace could change this - Maslow’s Philosophy o Growth oriented psychology  Maslow eschewed scientific method - Fails to capture the essence of human nature- Preferred experiential knowledge  People develop through various levels to their full potential - Some make it all the way but most don’t - Focused on those who do - Hierarchy of Needs o From animalistic needs to uniquely human motivations o Five levels  Four “deficiency” motivations  One “being” motivation o Deficiency Motivation  Basic needs are unmet  Four deficiency needs emerge in a particular order When each is sufficiently met the next becomes salient - 1. Physiological needs o Food, water, sleep, sexo Essential to survival - 2. Safety Needs o Assurance of safe situation These notes represent a detailed interpretation of the professor’s lecture. Love and Belongingness Needs o Seeking to give and receive love and friendshipo Feeling of kinship with other, having a place in society - 4. Esteem Needs o Self respect and the respect of others o “Stable and firmly based” o Source of achievement striving o Unmet esteem needs produces sense of inferiority- Self Actualization o Full development of human potential o “Ongoing actualization of potentials, capacities, and talents, fulfillments of one’s calling, a fuller knowledge and acceptance of one’s own intrinsic nature, an unceasing trend toward unity and integration within the person”o Very few people reach this level – fewer then one percent o Fuzzy concept – illustrated by examples  Abe Lincoln, Thomas Jefferson, Albert Einstein, Eleanor Roosevelt, WilliamJames - Characteristics of Self Actualized People o Efficient perception of realityo Spontaneity and creativityo Kinship with humanity  Democratic values Increased acceptance of self and others  Non prejudiced o Independence  True to selfo Greater richness and range of emotional reactions o Deep intimacy with loved oneso Task focused o Increased need for privacy and solitudeo Philosophical
