BluesCurrent LectureSouthern MusicThe South has been engaged with global relationships for many years. Growth has been exponential. Computer Under the Magnolia Tree - William Ferris Walmart, Airplanes, telephones, etc. The future of the South will not be dependent on textiles, but on ideas. The study of the south is a hybrid of fields: archaeology, folklore, literature, American studies. When we study the South, we are moving beyond the Civil War. We might think of the South as the most American because it was in the South that Thomas Jefferson crafted the Declaration and Constitution. We see the deep values of patriotism, religion, and family. However it is also un-American because of slavery. The tragedy of race is our Achilles heel. The degree to where we address race is the degree to where we move forward. The South is multi-faceted. It is globally loved and feared. Beloved films: Gone With the Wind, The Color Purple, etc. All in the South. These notes represent a detailed interpretation of the professor’s lecture.
