New-MalthusiansCurrent LectureDemography is the study of the size, composition, growth, and distribution of human population. Where are people? Are populations growing/declining and why? Are there political, economic, and healthcare ramifications to growth and decline? There is a historical focus on fertility, mortality, and migration.Demographic transition is the theory describing a possible transition from high birth and death rates to low birth/death rates as part of the economic development of a country from preindustrial to industrial. There are four stages of this. 1. High birth rate and high fluctuating death rate. 2. Declining death rates and high birth rates. 3. Declining birth/death rates. 4. Low death rates and low but fluctuating birth rates. Most developed countries are at stage 4/4, whilemost developing countries are at stage 2 or 3 out of 4. Countries that have moved through the demographic transition well become more stable. Population control contends that it is better to prevent the birth of an enemy than to meet them on the battlefield, but this isn’t exactly correct. Some countries get old before they get rich.New Malthusians argue that over the long-term, fertility of a population depends on the most rapidly reproducing subgroups within the population. In the short-term, overall growth rate will slow as most of the existing groups have fewer children, but will pick back up.These notes represent a detailed interpretation of the professor’s lecture.
