Questions about News Diversity and availability- less popular views get less coverage,limited diversity of information because of small number of owners who control what gets broadcasted in the media. There was an abundance of media coverage about the controversy of the affordable care act and less coverage of what the act would actually entail. II. Types of Media Regulation- Less regulation of newspapers because they are not using publically owned airways like television and radio. A. Fairness Doctrine- regulation that has been repealed in 1987, established in 1949, when broadcasting information on controversial subject the media must present time for the opposition to be seen and heard.B. Equal Time Rule- still in effect, if a station wants to sell time to a candidate the stations must sell time to the other opponent. C. Government regulation of sexual material on the internet- congress passed the “Communications Decency Act” in 1996, this law made it illegal for seventeen years old or younger access to sexually indecent material on the internet, challenged in supreme court, they over ruled the law and said it was unconstitutional. D. Government can step in and censor information for national security, courts havebeen very narrow with what the government can censor. III. It was hoped that the media providing so much information about politics, it has shown that the public does not absorb all of the information.B. Conditions that exist when media is influential.C. Media is less influential when it tends to reinforce existing beliefs. When someone feels strongly of something, it is hard to change that opinion. - Media is more influential when people don’t have strong views or care about politics, these citizens can be more influenced by media. People who know and care less about politics are more likely to be swayed by negative political advertisements in campaigns. D. Agenda Setting being influential- agenda setting is giving certain types of storiesmore attention. With agenda setting, we aren’t shaping the public’s opinion support or opposition, it is making an issue relevant to the public. E. Priming- an effect of media coverage, an instance when the media becomes important in influencing what people are thinking, priming is carrying stories in a certain way so the public is prepared to respond to coverage in a certain way. Themedia does the priming. F. When a candidate gets media attention they become a “Front-Runner” , they receive a lot of attention from the media. G. Framing an Issue-defining what the issue is.
