MoviesCurrent LecturePopular Culture- Encompasses the most immediate and contemporary activities of our lives- Defined by its typicality – looks at its society entirely - Terms include common culture, pop culture, mass culture, mass leisure- It’s what most people are doing now- Common topics of conversation- “Mirror in which we can see ourselves, understand who we are, what we are, and why”o James Bond – endured and lastedo Miley Cyrus – happened but hasn’t lasted- Driven by the media - “contains the primary fund of ideas that informs our daily lives- Sometimes exerting more influence than family, friends, school or work - Popular culture delivers messages we internalize and act on later- “Perhaps we should examine its content and resist its influence at times”Popular Culture Characteristics- PopularThese notes represent a detailed interpretation of the professor’s lecture. It was the community habit.”- “However when the television came around, people going to the movies dropped noticeably.”- “Cinema has become a powerful vehicle for culture, education, leisure and propaganda.”- “Contemporary research has revealed profound aspects to film’s impact on society.”- Also good to help remember history or a particular person - Selma, Titanic – reeducation - Also take a huge position – American Sniper Long-term picture is one of slight decline- Down 10% since 2002- Generally speaking, the market, on AVERAGE is decreasing - Average moviegoer attends a film in the theater less than once per month - Today’s movie audiences tend to be educated, young, female, urban, and affluent Movie Theater Trends- Discounts, Bars, Comfier Seats - Restaurants and bars in theaters- Even Larger screens- IMAX- Larger seats and “love”
