Bio 105 1st Edition Lecture 26Current Lecture (25)We…- Think about our thoughts (do other species?)- Contemplate death- “See” deep time- Posses a sense of wonder and beautyAnthropogene – What we are in currently. Must pass through special committee to be added to geologic time scale.- Transforming planet- Driven by evolution, expansion, and consumption of one species. - When to begin? Perhaps 1950.o Mass production on plastics (made from oil, fossil fuel product)o Isotopes from nuclear weapons.o Drastic increase in resources appetite of Hydrogen.o Drastic reduction in biodiversity.Three discrete phases 1. Modern humans disperse out of Africa ~100,000 years ago.2. ~100,000 years ago with agriculture and fishing3. ~ Last few hundred years wit science revolution, fossil fuels, and Internet. Drastic increase in human consumption.Megafaunal (“large animal”) extinctions: not comprehensive, are associated with human arrival.Humans are an evolutionary force without modern technology. In Hawaii – There has been at least 1000 extinctions since human arrival. It was drastically altered prior to arrival of Europeans. We engaged in agriculture, habitat disruption.Feral – domestic species living in the wild. For example, pigs. Phase 1 extinctions were not comprehensive, did not break down ecosystem. But… Extinctions in recent times have been greatly accelerated and expanded with technology. These notes represent a detailed interpretation of the professor’s lecture. GradeBuddy is best used as a supplement to your own notes, not as a substitute. The Sixth Extinction- Is likely ended the Cenozoic Era (65 million year period)- Almost without exception, extinctions in recent times can be attributed to human activity.- Some of it cannot be stopped, some of it can.- Consequences of ecological extinction are clearly evident, E.g. marine ecosystem.Disruption of Ecosystem function:How do ecosystems function?- Increase biodiversity and biomass (weight of libing matter, besides water)- Support photosynthesis - Sequester carbon- Build soil fertility- Cycle nutrients- Purify water- Keep population in check- Functioning food webs- Retention of rainfall in
