Theories of Prejudice: Ideas about why people become prejudice1. Scapegoat theory- Prejudice here comes from people themselves who are disadvantaged. Have someone to blame other than themselves.2. Authoritarian personality theory- comes from people with certain strong personality types. Very strong prejudice and are intolerant of minorities. They grow up with very rigid beliefs that certain things are right and wrong in society. They believe the better people dominate the weaker people. And they consider themselves the better people. Ex. White supremises3. Culture theory- Says that only certain people show strong prejudice but everybody has a little bit. Stems from our culture. This particular theory was the work of 1970’s college students.4. Conflict theory- says that prejudice is used as a tool by powerful people to oppress the weaker ones. Ex. Farmers who hire immigrants.Discrimination - is unequal treatment of various categories of people – Prejudice is the attitude. Discrimination is the action to the attitude.Institutional Discrimination- it is built into the operation of society itself. Ex. Homosexual couple or minority apply for loan to try to move to a white heterosexual neighborhood, but will be denied even if they have everything in order and ready.Four (4) patterns of interaction between majority and minority groups: Majority groups- who has the power1. Pluralism- smaller groups within the greater dominant society, but still maintain their own cultural.2. Assimilation- Canadians assimilate easily. Cuban, Japanese, and German do not assimilate easily to our culture3. Segregation- the physical and social separation of categories of people. Illegal in U.S. People segregate themselves. Ex. The Amish, or poor/ poverty stricken people.4. Genocide- The systematic killing of one category of people by another. Occurs in more regions than others. Global feminism Outline of Current Lecture with Lecture NotesChapter 11: Race & Ethnicity- Race- is a socially constructed category or people who share biologically transmitted traits that members of a society consider important- Ethnicity- is a shared cultural heritage -Minorities –any category y of people distinguished by physical or culturaldifference that a society sets apart and subordinates--Racism – the belief that one racial category of people is innately superior orinferior to another. - Prejudice - a rigid and unfair generalization about an entire category of people. It targets people by social class, sex, age, sexual orientation, religion, politics, and almost anything and everything you can think of. It is a pre judgment. I can be a positive or a negative. Negative prejudices would condemn differences. - Stereotype - It is an exaggerated description applied to every person in some category. - What are some of the impacts Stereotyping Has?1. It distorts our perception of others.2. Once a stereotype is activated, it comes easy to your mind.3. Affect judgments that we make about others.4.
