BIOL 240W 1st Edition Lecture 24Outline of Last Lecture I. Worksheet on HomeostasisII. Circulatory SystemIII. ReproductionOutline of Current LectureI. Physiology of Sexual ArousalII. AnatomyIII. Female Reproductive SystemCurrent LectureI. Physiology of Sexual Arousala. Bulbourethral gland gets stimulated, so nerves go down to reproductive system. Signal secretion into urethra. “precum” comes from bulbourethral glandb. Penis becomes erect from blood flow into “spongy” tissuec. During orgasm and ejaculation all components of semen are pushed into urethrad. Skeletal muscle exists near pelvis (pelvic floor). These muscle contract during orgasmi. Pressure inside body increases helps to drive sperm out of urethraii. Smooth muscle also goes through its own contraction to push semen mixed withsperme. Resolution phase is when the body returns to normal, and males enter a refractory period right after where they cannot have another orgasmII. Anatomya. Penis is made of shaft, glans (head), and prepuce (foreskin)b. Rodents, raccoons, walruses, and whales have a baculum/penis bone and do not rely on the penis becoming erect because they have skeletal supportIII. Female Reproductive Systema. Production of gametesi. egg cells/oocytes formed via meiosisii. Occur in ovaries, which are inside abdominal cavityiii. During ovulation, valet of hormones push egg cells outside of ovaries and drawn into oviduct/uterine tube/fallopian tube.1. Cilia (hair-like projections from cells) containing proteins allow cilia to move and push egg cell along through the tubesThese notes represent a detailed interpretation of the professor’s lecture. GradeBuddy is best used as a supplement to your own notes, not as a substitute.iv. If fertilization does occur, it occurs in the oviduct to produce a zygote1. Sperm cells are blind, deaf, and mute (also the case with egg cells). Therefore, fertilization occurs in the oviduct because it resembles a “hallway” and they are most likely to meet herev. Egg cell then ends up inside
