The ABDs of physical activity:Affect: emotionsBehavior: actionsCognitions: thoughtThe goals of sport and exercise psychology is to understand the social-psychological factors that influence people’s behavior and performance in physical activity, to understand the psychological effects derived from participation in physical activity, and to enhance the sport and exercise experiences for those who participate in physical activity.Exercise psychology focuses on the psychological aspect of fitness, exercise, health, and wellness. Sport psychology focuses on the psychological aspect of competitive sport participation. Both have close tires with kinesiology AND psychology. Six main areas of Sports Psychology: 1. Personality: Successful Athletes vs Unsuccessful Athletes: Self confident, better coping skills,able to control emotions, better attention focusing and re-focusing, views anxiety as beneficial, and more highly determined.These notes represent a detailed interpretation of the professor’s lecture. GradeBuddy is best used as a supplement to your own notes, not as a substitute.2. Motivation: is a complex set of internal and external forces that directs and energizes our behavior (choice, effort, and persistence) in sport exercise. All humans, regardless of their individual goals, are motivated to feel competent and self-determining. Intrinsic Motivation: Internal motivation. Doing a behavior because you enjoy the process and the participation. Long term fueling process for commitment and achievement of goals.  External Motivation: being rewarded. Doing a behavior to gain a reward. Enhance motivation short-term. Rewards can be used to help enhance competence, which increases intrinsic motivation. Must reward the right behaviors, not all behaviors.3.
