Vietnam ProtestsCurrent LectureThe Late 50s Thumb its Nose at the Beats- Coinciding with the end of the 50s was the idea that students and young people could have a good time, sometimes even in excess. The Beats had fun but they were explaining their own bedrocks. The hippies were more about fun, period- Ken Kesey working in VA hospitals discovered that the army was running experiments onnew drugs meant to incapacitate the enemy. He quickly volunteered and started tripping on weird drugsSan Francisco State1) at least one teach brought pot to class and made his class smoke. When told to stop, he didn’t.2) Seymour Locke in 1958 taught a class in Light and Art. This was to give rise to light shows when one of his students, Elias Romero, started putting on public showsBerkeley and Free Speech - At this time the Haight-Ashbury was being populated by San Francisco State weirdos, Berkeley just across the way was continuing its tradition of political free speech- Student protest began in 1964o Demanded lift of school ban of on-campus political activities1962: Timothy Leary tries psilocybin mushrooms and returns to Harvard to start IFIF: The International Foundation for Internal Freedom- Is given the Hitchcock estate in Millbrook New York when he starts the Castalia Foundation These notes represent a detailed interpretation of the professor’s lecture.
