ANTR 350 1st Edition Lecture 24Outline of Last Lecture I. Sympathetic divisionII. Blood flowIII. DistributionIV. Sympathetic innervationV. Thoracolumbar Outline of Current Lecture II. Sympathetic system responsesIII. Parasympathetic divisionIV. CraniosacralV. Parasympathetic functionsCurrent Lecture-sympathetic system responses-cardiovascular system-accelerate heart rate and increase contractility-vasoconstriction of blood vessels-respiratory system-dilate airways àinc. airflow-eye-dilate pupils-makes lens thinner to improve long-distance vision, increase field of view-mobilization of metabolic substrates for ATP production-skin-increase sweat gland secretion-stimulatearrectorpili mm.-gastrointestinal systemThese notes represent a detailed interpretation of the professor’s lecture. GradeBuddy is best used as a supplement to your own notes, not as a substitute.-overall decrease in activity, thicker saliva-parasympathetic-“Rest, Digest and Restore”-has a more limited distribution in the body-viscera of head (eyes and lacrimal and salivary glands), -viscera within the ventral body cavities, -erectile tissues of male and female genitalia-NO innervation to limbs, sweat glands, blood vessels, or skin-“craniosacral” division because the preganglionic cell bodies are located in the brainstem and sacral spinal cord-postganglionic cell bodies are located in or near the organ innervated àpreganglionic axons are relatively long & postganglionic axons are short-functions of parasympathetic-reduction in heart rate-constriction of respiratory passageways.-increased smooth muscle activity along the digestive tract.-increased blood flow to GI tract-secretion by digestive glands, including salivary glands, gastric glands, duodenal and other intestinal glands, the pancreas, and the liver.-secretion of hormones that promote nutrient absorption by peripheral cells-stimulation and coordination of defecation.-constriction of the pupils to restrict the amount of light entering the eyes; thickens lens for near vision. Causes lacrimal glands to secrete tears-contraction of the urinary bladder to cause urination.-skin – does not innervate-arterioles – does NOT innervate most arterioles-genitalia – dilates blood vessels which causes erection of genitalia (rare exception)-glands – causes secretion in all glands EXCEPT sweat
