BrucellosisII. PseudorabiesIII. ParvoIV. Eryseplas V. LeptospirosisVI. MMAVII. ColibaccilosisCurrent Lecture- Bring pigs into herd test for (Brucellosis & Pseudorabies)- Brucellosis: o Zoonotico Symptoms: abortion, high fevers  Can treat w/ antibiotics, and will clear the individual initially, but the disease stays in joints and you will have long lasting effectso In feral pig population, but in domestic pig population its almost extinct If feral pigs come in contact with your domestic swine, infection is possibleo Main cause of contractions in humans is from needle sticking o Located in Central & South America very common If you are working there- Pseudorabies: (Aujeskys)o Viral disease (Bacteria)o Highly deadly neurological disease in other species (dogs & cats)o Still exists in USAThese notes represent a detailed interpretation of the professor’s lecture. GradeBuddy is best used as a supplement to your own notes, not as a substitute.o No good vaccine  (Destroy individuals affected) - Isolate animals for 30 days & retest any major disease will manifest- Parvo:o Viral infection (Bacteria)o Same results as in dogso Symptoms: Diarrhea, weak pigs, abortiono Good vaccination (96% effective)- Eryseplas (aka Diamond Skin Disease)o Zoonotico Found in soilo Almost any animal can carry it and give it to swine (rats esp.)o High fever capillaries explode  106°F in pigs is high  Diamonds remain on skin (does not affect meat quality)o If swine contracts this disease you can take care of it Treat w/ antibiotics- Lepsospirosis: o Zoonotic  Every mammal has a different straino Water carries ito Destroys kidneyso Vector around pigs ratso When making a vaccine: put 5 different strands in vaccine o Also vaccinate dogs for it (recommended)- Vaccinate for Parvo, Eryseplas & Leptospirosis - Lepto & Parvo look similar almost like a mummified state- One reported case of pig getting rabieso Swine have a large fat level and thick skin, hard for the virus to get into the body- Holistic medicine will not work - Swine flu type A influenzao So is human flu and avian influenza- Vaccine will pass through colostrum- MMA: disease complex (stuck together)o Viral Diseaseo Normally occurs after dystocia (birthing problems)o Metritus uterine infectiono Mastitus utter infection o Agalacia total loss of life o Anyone of the three can cause the othero Will show discharge from vulva White, or yellow (normal discharge is clear)o Mom will not feed babieso Treat ASAP1. Shot of Oxytocin a. Will cause utter to release anything (dead baby, part of her placenta)2. Give 3 shots of Oxytetracycline over a 3 day period (1 shot a day)a. Must restrain sow bc it’s extremely painfulb. Works 100% of the timeo It is common for facilities to treat prophylactically  Will give oxytocin right after birtho Never take babies away from mom with Metritus and Mastitus If nursing, they will help her body rid the infection o Take the babies away if she has Agalacia  She will dieo 100% mortality & if treated early 1% mortality- Colibaccilousis:o Caused by E. Coli E. Coli is everywhereo 100% mortality treat early 10% mortality o Signs: Limited sounds and sour milk smell while farrowing o Does not take long for scours to develop o Within 24 hours: babies will starve Diarrhea: yellow (sick)black (dead)o Neomycin- oral antibiotic down throat One shot every day for 3 days Four hours after first shot, up and around B/c disease is in digestive tract, the oral gets to it quickly- No vaccine for Colibaccilosis or
