Oil SpillsC. Wildlife RehabilitationCurrent Lecture Zoos and Conservation- Zooso Zoos are either AZA (Association of Zoos and Aquariums) accredited or not. Those accredited receive regular inspection so that they meet the minimum requirements of a zoo. o Zoos are expected to be involved in education, species survival plans, conservation research, green practices, habitat restoration, and Conservation Partners.o They also teach biodiversity.o Zoos contribute to conservation by wildlife rehabilitation, using captive animals to research wild animals, working in collaborations to provide expertise, technical capability, and financial support, and spreading the word.- Oil Spillso Zoos have had direct involvement with oil spill research.o The Exxon Valdez oil spill in Prince William Sound, Alaska was one of these that occurred in 1989.o It was caused because the tanker struck a reef. o About 11 million gallons of oil spilled into PWS. o This spill led to research and helped in the BP Deepwater Horizon spill. These notes represent a detailed interpretation of the professor’s lecture. GradeBuddy is bestused as a supplement to your own notes, not as a substitute.o The species of Harlequin Duck was researched because of the Exxon oil spill. These ducks are sea duck and are common winter residents in PWS. They occur almost exclusively in intertidal and shallow areas. The ducks forage on benthic invertebrates. In order to observe oil consumption, liver samples were taken andbiopsied. In 2013, there was complete reduction of oil.- Wildlife Rehabilitationo The Florida Manatee (West Indian Manatee) is a warm water endangered species. There is a rehabilitation center located at the Lowry Park Zoo. Manateesusually stay where people are and at power plants during the winter because of the warmth. To capture manatees, a drop net is dropped in the water while circling the animal with a boat. Slings, cranes, and chemical restraints are utilized to hold the manatee and prevent rolling. A thermometer is placed in the cheek to check the temperature of the manatee. The problems that occur in manatees are as follows: orphaned calves, watercraft injuries, entanglement, and cold stress. In order to release them back into the wild, they must be medically cleared and eat their natural diet for 45 days before the release. They also must be tagged for monitoring.o Evansville Zoo helped with the research involving American martens. Their goal was to reintroduce them into Michigan. Martens are from the family of mustelidae. They hunt prey on the ground and in trees. Males are typically larger than females. This project involved collaborative research with a zoo, Native American tribe, and a university. Venison was used in traps, but they soon found that martens were not picky with their food sources. Traps were placed in dark holes and marked. The personnel found that the martens were becoming dehydrated in the traps. To help this problem, water was made available in the traps. Also, the martens were only allowed to stay in the traps for a certain amount of time. The lure they used for martens were made from anal glands of animals. Martens can be aged by their teeth. They can also contract diseases from domestic cats. These notes represent a detailed interpretation of the professor’s lecture. GradeBuddy is best used as a supplement to your own notes, not as a
