GC 170a1 1st Edition Lecture 13 Outline of Last Lecture - Ozone:o Where is the ozone layer?o How is ozone produced?o How does ozone protect us from UV radiation?- CFC’so What are they?o How do they destroy the ozone?- Ozone discoveryOutline of Current Lecture - Political side of Ozoneo Government steps after discovery- Montreal Protocol 1987o Limiting CFC productiono CFC emission today?o Why was it remarkable?- What About CO2?o Fossil Fuelso AlternativesCurrent LectureThe political side of the ozone- The first government stepso In 1978, the US and a few other governments initiated a ban on non-essential CFC technology (aerosol cans) oThese notes represent a detailed interpretation of the professor’s lecture. GradeBuddy is best used as a supplement to your own notes, not as a substitute.o In the 1970’s, significant funding was made available to study the problem further Contrary evidence presented by the chemical industry focused on the lower atmosphere, couldn’t provide any evidence of the stratosphereo The time period of the 1970’s to mid-1980’s was called the ‘Ozone Wars’ - Montreal Protocol 1987 o Signed by all major industrial nations  Placed strict limits on CFC production  Additional revisions (1990, 1992) were made as more evidence was released o What happened with this? The chemical industry developed alternatives (HCFC’s) and there is a high rate of complianceo Today, there are basically zero emissions of CFC’s Ozone hole seems to have stabilized, not growing rapidly anymore - Recovery may have started  May take another ~ 40 – 50 years for full ozone hole recoveryo It was a remarkable thing because The ban on CFC’s (Montreal Protocol 1987) came within 15 years of the first R and M hypothesis of ozone depletion Very quick decision on their part- Why is it taking so long for government policy to place strict limits on CO2 production? o The fossil fuel industry is much larger than the chemical industry o Much greater reliance on fossil fuels in our daily lives o Alternatives are not as readily available or easy to adapt
