Intentional Nonverbal (eyebrows?)e. Unintentional Nonverbal (More common)2) Why Study Communication?a. It is Pervasive phenomenon (like air)- Cannot exist w/o itb. It is practicali. Personal outcomesii. Professional outcomesiii. We need communication as a necessity, our minds need the social stimulationiv. Prisoners tapping their alphabet to communicatec. People think they are better at communication than they actually arev3) One definition of Human Communication:a. The process of creating a meaning between two or more people4) Effective Communication Outcomes (when it’s done well)a. Understandingb. Pleasure c. Attitude influence (attitude is a judgment on something)d. Improved relationshipse. ActionTerms and Definitions:- Communication/Communications- Class is Communication (with no s)- Communication= the study of messages/theoretical communication- Communications= What you have done all your life -> The practice of using messages. Applied communications. The ACT ofmessaging and communication.- Cognitive/Cognition - Cognitive response-> Understanding ->Thought- Thinking= cognition - Affect- Emotion or emotional response- Strong Affect Response= Freaked out- Social- Human beings/People/Interaction- Relationships are very important to life- Communication studied from a social perspective - Context- The current situation or circumstances- “Framework”- Things can change or lose meaning out of context Quotes, cultural artifacts, jokes, etc.- Important for understanding messages and what they mean- Quantitative- Idea that describes research- Interested in numbers and counting things- “How long was the speech, how long was the average word, how many syllables” etc. - Scales of 1-10- How much time do they spend together- Coding: translating language into a numerical system- Difficult to lie with numbers (not impossible)- Qualitative - Focus is NOT on numbers- Description, using words- Gives description of what is happening - Essays on meaning and point and perspective etc.- Tweets, conversations, etc- D E S C R I P T I V E- Sees the world in a fundamentally different way than the Quantitative people, and it can cause conflict - Implication- A logical relationship between two propositions in which the first proposition is true and the second proposition is also true- (Proposition can also be called “thing” or “idea”)- Based on the first idea being true, then what else is true?- Ex: This class is held in Gallagher Theater. This means it is also inthe Student Union/Because class is being held here, then it means the U of A is crowded since they don’t usually like to haveclasses in here.- Root word of implication: imply “Are you sure you want to wear that?” Implication: go change your clothes Sometimes words hurt feelings directly, so people use politeness to step around the issue to be more delicate - To imply is to indicate by inference rather than by direct statement - Implication is a Logical Inference - Sometimes implications can be misunderstood- Need to know what’s going on even though it’s not said directly, subtext- Sometimes can be missed entirely- So, an implication is a logical consequence of a proposition that is not directly stated by a proposition - Implications based on ^ definition of communication- Symbolic- different symbols for languages (think of slang in American English vs Australian English. They use different words for the same things and is difficult for both sides to decode each other’s) Digital Codes- Most language is digital- No bearing to the meaning that it represents- All words/nouns are arbitrary - As long as we agree that’s all we need- No correspondence between the word and the meaning Analogic codes- More of a resemblance between code and meaning. - Hand gestures, raising voice, sounds like or looks likewhat it is- Loud voice= trying to get someone’s attention; Smile=happiness- Nonverbal behavior is analogic - Some words are analogic (like the sounds of animals or like ‘click’)  Must be a way to decode the language- Overt and Covert Overt: Things readily available, spoken aloud. Obvious. Covert: Information that is not readily available to you. Behind the scenes stuff. Hidden (or should stay so) - Encoding and Decoding Teacher encodes and we decode Goes both ways, simultaneously - A Means and an End A tool that allows us to do different things Allows us to build relationships with other people by communicating, exchanging messages. Job is the end, interview (communication) is the means Communication can be the goal itself (it’s enjoyable or it’s interesting, etc)Truths- Humans are Socialo Hard not to talk because it’s kind of who we are, like breathingo Essential part of our humanityo ALL HUMANS are social at some levelo Removal from sensory input can cause people to hallucinate because they need to create some sort of reality- Humans are Politeo Helps us to get alongo Supposed to be the standard, the default, the normo Going to be communicating indirectly - Humans Deceiveo ~10% of texts contain a lieo ~25% of people admitted to falsifying information on Facebook o ~75% of online daters exaggerated some of their attributes o People tend to tell frequent lies that are small in magnitude
